ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
JUDO OSOTO GARI TO SIDE CONTROL, TOP
LEVEL 1 - SINGLE COLLAR TIE
Though somewhat low-level, this excellent technique move can allow “The Anvil” to transition into dominant Side Control on the ground from a standard Single Collar Tie clinch. Nice!
DIRECT CATCH TO KIMURA FROM SIDE CONTROL, TOP
LEVEL 2 - SIDE CONTROL, TOP
After transitioning into Side Control, don’t posture up into sub position, but instead simply lock in this powerful kimura from the top—Gamburyan’s opponents may not be expecting this.
DIRECT CATCH TO KIMURA FROM OPEN GUARD, BOTTOM
LEVEL 2 - OPEN GUARD CLINCH, BOTTOM
Gamburyan can attack with great strength from the bottom as well as the top. Grab his opponent in a ground clinch, then go for the kimura to crank his shoulder from the bottom.
STRENGTHS
- Judo
- Aggressive Style
Manvel “The Anvil” Gamburyan is a powerful submission grappler whose excellent judo throws from the clinch can land him in dominant positions on the ground.
Once Gamburyan brings his opponent down to the mat, he can then work at applying his dangerous arm locks and chokes.
Though extremely strong for his weight class, “The Anvil” is not very fast or proficient on the feet—it’s best to use his limited striking ability as a means of working your way into the clinch, or to set up driving takedowns.
He knows a variety of clinch throws and suplexes that can land him in dominant Side Control on the ground—try locking in kimuras from here, or pass to Mount and work some devastating ground-and-pound as you look for the TKO win.
WEAKNESSES

Kick Defense
“The Anvil” is a powerful striker, but his poor speed, limited footwork, and low-level striking technique make him easy prey for seasoned kickboxers.
Avoid his grappling game, and you’ll find him easy to outmaneuver and dismantle on the feet.
Use constant movement and throw quick strikes in short combinations to pick him apart from the outside.
Don’t shoot for takedowns even if he’s being aggressive and coming forward—Gamburyan is dangerous off his back and can threaten you with powerful submissions from the bottom.
Simply avoid the grappling game entirely by remaining elusive and exploiting his poor footwork and limited striking ability.
Work over his legs with plenty of leg kicks to slow him down even further and make “The Anvil” easier to outmaneuver and punish on the feet.
