ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

LEFT/RIGHT BRAZILIAN HEAD KICK

Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range

These lethal head kicks come with great speed and force, capitalizing on Pettis’s great kicking ability and rocking his opponents from range.

TWO STEP FLYING RIGHT KNEE

Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range

Close in on opponents with lethal intent by throwing this fast flying knee after performing a forward step. Connecting with just one of these can quickly bring about the fight’s end.

DIRECT CATCH TO  TRIANGLE CHOKE

Level 2—Open Guard Clinch, Bottom

“Showtime” has some great submissions off his back—lock in this tight triangle from the bottom whenever opponents manage to bring him to the ground with a takedown.

STRENGTHS

  • Grappling

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis is an outstanding UFC lightweight kickboxer with excellent footwork and striking speed on the feet.

Pettis has lethal kicks that can quickly begin to damage his opponent’s legs, body, or head after he begins to land them.

Use his speed to overwhelm his opponents on the feet, moving in and out of striking range as you light them up with sharp combos and counters.

Look for submissions from his back if you’re taken down, because “Showtime” has excellent subs from the bottom, including triangles and kimuras.

Overwhelm opponents with his superior kickboxing prowess in the stand-up battle until they decide to shoot in, then threaten them with his dangerous ground grappling game as you attack with various submissions from the bottom.

WEAKNESSES

  • Clinch grappling
  • Takedowns

Pettis’s fast, accurate kickboxing and dangerous ground game off his back make him a tough opponent to overcome both on the feet and on the ground.

The clinch is therefore the best place to fight “Showtime”—work at getting inside and clinching up with him so that you can musclehim around in the position and control him without suffering his blistering stand-up skills.

If you can, stuff him against the cage to give him even more trouble escaping—healso suffers even more damage from your clinch strikes when he’s trapped against the fence.

Work him over with heavy blows in the Muay Thai Clinch, or risk going for a throw from a grappler’s clinch to bring him to the ground and land outside of his dangerous guard.
