ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
STRONG LEFT/RIGHT UPPERCUT
Level 2—Muay Thai Clinch Cage, Offense
Rivera is at his best in the clinch. These uppercuts do serious damage against the cage.
STRONG LEFT/RIGHT PUNCH
Level 2—Mount, Top
These nasty punches do great work from the Mount position. Posture up and put your opponent to sleep.
DIRECT CATCH TO TRIANGLE CHOKE
Level 1—Butterfly Guard, Bottom
If you find yourself on your back, transition to Butterfly Guard and go for a triangle.
STRENGTHS
- Well rounded
- Knockout power
- Experience
Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera has great strikes from his feet, from the clinch, and on the ground.
And he’s used them in this division for over a decade. In fact, his win-loss record reads like a who’s who of the middleweight division, so he definitely has the experience to be near the top of the division.
He is a clinch striker and likes to work ground-and-pound, so identify the techniques that will inflict the most damage when you get to the dominant offensive position and swing away.
He’s well rounded within his skill set and has at least one go-to move from every position, assuming you can transition to it.
From the clinch, put your opponent up against the cage and go to work with dirty boxing and knees.
If you can, transition to a takedown there and achieve the Mount. Fire big blows (watch your stamina) to take advantage of his great ground striking ability and log a KO.
WEAKNESSES
- Cardio
- Working off his back
“El Conquistador” is—ahem—“established” in the MMA game. He’s 39 years old. Though he is a super athlete, his Cardio rating now is a pretty low 72.
There are a bunch of active middleweights in the division that may be hard for him to keep up with. Push the action and test Rivera.
The position he struggles in the most is from his back with the BJJ, so keep control on top and block his transitions.
He wants to ground and pound, so if you’re playing as one of the exceptional strikers in the division, keep your distance and stay out of the clinch.
Rivera’s Submission rating is a 66, so again, put him on his back and keep control. Even if he locks in his triangle, you have a great chance of defending it.
