STRENGTHS
- Ground-and-pound
- Wrestling
- Heart
Matt “The Hammer” Hamill is a skilled wrestler with good ground-and-pound and solid dirty boxing skills in the clinch.
Look to bring opponents to the ground with his powerful takedowns—”The Hammer” has an excellent shot that few can easily defend. Once you’ve brought the opponent to the mat, begin to work some ground-and-pound from the top.
He’s susceptible to submissions, so it’s best to avoid the ground game when fighting against submission specialists—use his strong clinch game against these adversaries instead, controlling the position and working the opponent over with heavy uppercuts in the Muay Thai Clinch.
Perform suplexes and throws from the clinch if you wish to enter the ground game with a positional advantage—this can be a great way to help “The Hammer” move into Mount, where he can really do some damage with his brutal brand of ground-and-pound.
WEAKNESSES
- Speed
“The Hammer” can be tough to handle in the clinch or on the ground, but his stand-up game is fairly amateur.
He knows few effective technique strikes on the feet and suffers from sluggish footwork and poor striking speed—exploit these weaknesses to outstrike him, but beware of Hamill’s knockout power.
He also has a dangerous takedown and clinch game, so maintain a respectable striking distance at all times to prevent him from easily grappling with you.
Tag him with quick strikes from the outside, and be ready to sprawl against his powerful takedowns at any given moment.
Beat him up strategically on the feet, picking him apart as you shut down his strong grappling game.
