DIRECT CATCH TO GOGOPLATA FROM THE BOTTOM
Level 3—Rubber Guard, Bottom
Level 3—Rubber Guard, Bottom
DIRECT CATCH TO TRIANGLE CHOKE
Level 2—Open Guard, Bottom
Diaz can pull off a triangle from multiple positions and switch to an armbar from the bottom, too.
STRENGTHS
- Conditioning
- Unorthodox style
- Very well rounded
Nick Diaz has awesome submissions and submission defense. Pair that with his rangy punches and he has the striking range and the ground game covered. Attack your opponent in one of these two positions, throwing whippy punches and aggressively going for submissions on the ground.
He’s very good off his back, so if your opponent takes the fight there and tries to ground-and-pound, clinch in the guard and transition to a Butterfly Guard or Rubber Guard to get to some Level 3 submissions.
There are very few people who can roll with Diaz, so keep the fight here and a BJJ match. Also, use the triangle choke from guard—Diaz can catch it easily from multiple guard positions on his back and you can switch it to an armbar.
WEAKNESSES
- Wrestling
- Kicks
- Strength
Diaz is no question a brilliant jiu-jitsu martial artist on the ground. However, he is not going to take you down to get there. He’ll stand and strike like it’s a street brawl in his hometown of Stockton, California, and he’ll go to the jiu-jitsu when the fight goes to the ground.
The best place to battle with Nick Diaz is in the clinch up against the cage. His Muay Thai is not very developed, and he can be overpowered. Press him up against the cage standing and grind it out.
If the fight separates, stay back and watch out for his boxing. Counter his long punches with a clinch and get back in close. You can take him down if your fighter is a wrestler, but he’s very crafty off his back.
Keep top control and damage him with ground-and-pound. If he gets into a really offensive guard position (Open, Butterfly, Rubber), get him off you and stand up.
