ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
DUCKING LEFT HOOK
Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range
This is a wicked Level 3 punch with a built-in sway. Throw a jab-cross, feint, and follow with this as a counterpunch for a devastating blow.
LEFT ELBOW
Level 3—Salaverry, Top
Ground-and-pound at its finest. From Side Control, mount your opponent with the crucifix (Salaverry), block transitions, and rain down these vicious elbow strikes.
BUSTER TO HALF GUARD CLINCH, TOP
Level 2—Body Lock, Offense
This is an awesome slam from the clinch. From Double Underhook, perform a minor transition to Body Lock and then a technique minor transition to the slam. Posture up and ground-and-pound.
STRENGTHS
- Ground-and-pound
- Speed
- Knockout power
Cain Velasquez is a super-athletic, smaller heavyweight with quick, powerful boxing.
Whether you’re in the clinch, on the ground, or toe-to-toe, pour on a steady stream of combination punches to your opponent because Velasquez has fantastic cardio for a big guy.
A simple 1-2-3 (quick left jab, quick right cross, and step into a left hook) should be your bread and butter, but follow with big rights to the body (hold the Technique Modifier trigger) and use the opponent’s sways and high blocks to set up takedowns when you’re in the pocket.
Feint and draw a big haymaker from your opponent, then counter with a takedown for some ground-and-pound.
WEAKNESSES
- Kicks
- Working from his back
Velasquez’s history is as a tremendous puncher, with eight of his first nine wins coming from knockouts from his hands.
Inside, he is deadly, so stay out of his range and pepper him with kicks high and low.
If the fight goes to the ground, get on top and block his transitions.
While Velasquez is not going to finish too many folks by submission, his Submission Defense rating is awesome at 87, so get on top and work some ground-and-pound, where his Ground Striking defense rates just 73.
Pass his guard to a dominant position and lay it on heavy.
