STRENGTHS
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
- Muay Thai
- Heart
Raphael Assuncao is a ground submission specialist with a solid all-around game. While his striking skills can be effective, they’re best used to set up Assuncao’s takedowns so he can work his superior ground grappling.
Once the action hits the mat, opponents will find that Assuncao is equally dangerous whether on top or bottom, owning plenty of sweeps and submissions off his back.
Though his submission ability is impressive, it’s best to utilize Assuncao’s excellent grappling skill to first achieve dominant position, then focus on wearing out the opponent and locking in the finisheR.
WEAKNESSES
- Clinch striking
- Ground striking
A force on the ground, Assuncao suffers a lack of movement speed and takedown ability on the feet—exploit these drawbacksand use superior footwork to keep him at bay.
Be prepared to stuff and punish Assuncao each time he shoots in for the takedown, and beware his ability to sweep you onto your back from the bottom of the Sprawl position even after you stuff his shot.
Assuncao’s clinch game is also somewhat lackluster and can easily be exploited by clinch specialists—however, entering the clinch with him puts you at greater risk of being taken down.
Try to keep Assuncao at striking range and pick him apart with superior speed without overexposing yourself to the takedown.
