ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
LEFT LONG STRAIGHT
Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range
This long, straight left is one of Kim’s best standing strikes. Use it to quickly close in and tag opponents from the outside.
JUDO OSOTO GARI TO SIDE CONTROL, TOP
Level 1—Single Collar Tie
A proficient judo practitioner, Stun Gun can throw his opponent to the ground from the Single Collar Tie clinch. This is normally considered to be a neutral clinch position, but he has the advantage here.
RIGHT/LEFT HOOK
Level 2—Open Guard, Top
Kim can bring down some heavy hooks once he succeeds in bringing his opponent to the mat. Work at securing the takedown, then posture up in Open Guard, Half Guard, or Mount to land these hard punches.
STRENGTHS
- Well rounded
- Judo
- Takedowns
Dong-Hyun Kim is a proficient judo grappler who wins most of his fights by bringing his opponents to the ground and controlling them from top position.
The Stun Gun has good takedowns and can unleash some brutal ground-and-pound if he manages to move into a dominant position such as Mount.
Don’t waste too much time mixing it up on the feet—try clinching with the opponent or scoring takedowns so that you can control his opponents with his superior grappling skill.
Focus on maintaining dominant position rather than working for submissions and knockouts—it’s important for him to remain in control, as he has poor defense and is vulnerable to being rocked or submitted when the fight isn’t going his way.
WEAKNESSES
- Strength
The Stun Gun can be tough to handle in the clinch and on the ground, but he’s not very good at getting things done in the stand-up department.
His lack of speed, striking power, and strike defense makes him highly vulnerable during exchanges on the feet—keep him on the end of your strikes and maintain a respectable distance from him to shut down his grappling game.
He doesn’t have the best takedowns, so expect him to try to clinch with you fairly often.
Punish him each time you stuff his takedown attempts and light him up from the outside with superior stand-up.
He doesn’t often go for submissions on the ground, so remain calm when he manages to bring you to the mat, and defend against his ground-and-pound as you work at escaping back up to your feet.
