ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
LUNGING RIGHT STRAIGHT
Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range
Though Browne knows some decent technique kicks, this heavy right hand is his most powerful standing strike. Throw this just after stepping forward to close in and clobber the opponent.
SUPLEX TO SIDE CONTROL, TOP
Level 2—Double Underhook, Offense
Browne has excellent ground-and-pound, but his takedowns aren’t always effective. Lock up in the Double Underhook clinch, then suplex the opponent to Side Control on the ground.
LEFT/RIGHT HOOK
Level 2—Open Guard, Top
Browne can batter his opponents with brutal ground-and-pound in the form of hooks thrown from various sub positions. This includes Half Guard and Mount as well as Open Guard.
STRENGTHS
- Grappling
- Size
Travis Browne is a big, powerful heavyweight brawler with knockout power on the feet and an overwhelming ground-and-pound game.
Though Browne can do some damage with his fists, his stand-up game is somewhat limited due to his poor speed—it’s therefore best to transition to the grappling game as quickly as possible, ideally bringing the opponent to the ground to dish out Browne’s offense more comfortably from the top.
Beware of grappling against submission specialists, however, as Travis is susceptible to subs and has difficulty fighting off of his back.
Try to remain standing against these opponents, and look to land quick defensive strikes while maintaining your distance.
If you must take a dangerous submission opponent down, simply try to maintain top position as you defend against transitions and subs, looking to grind out a victory.
WEAKNESSES
- Speed
- Kicks
Most heavyweights are somewhat slow, but Browne is a bit slower than most, which places him at risk of being countered and out-struck by many of his rivals on the feet.
Exploit this by keeping your distance on the feet and landing long, sharp counters each time Browne attempts to initiate a sluggish striking exchange.
He’s vulnerable to submissions and has trouble fighting off of his back, so feel free to dive in for takedowns if he’s foolishly being too aggressive on the feet.
Control him from the top on the ground, passing to dominant position and working to secure crippling submissions, which Browne will have difficulty fighting his way out of.
