Dan Severn is a strong wrestler who has tallied an amazing 100 wins in his MMA career, which has spanned almost 20 years back to UFC 4. He has great takedowns and takedown defense, and looks to get on top to finish his opponent with vicious ground striking and technical submissions.
Severn has tremendous cardio—some of the best in the division—so despite his one-dimensional nature, he can keep at it for the duration of the match. Use his Level 3 takedown proficiency from multiple offensive and defensive positions to get opponents to the ground and end up on top.
This will open up the only Level 2 strikes Severn has in his arsenal. He is a good striker in the ground-and-pound situation. Use these strikes to open up opportunities for Level 3 submissions for the win.
WEAKNESSES
- Poor striker
- Working off his back
It is no secret where this fight will end up if Severn is to be the winner. Avoid the takedown at all costs and keep the fight standing and from striking range.
There are a lot of good punchers in the heavyweight division, but Severn rates as the class’s worst with a dismal 63 for his hands and 60 for kicks. Not only that, he will have trouble avoiding strikes with his footwork, so most fighters will be able to dominate him in the stand-up.
If it does go to the ground, move to the top position with a sense of urgency (look for sweeps from the bottom in your Action List from the Pause menu), because despite Severn’s fantastic grappling from the top, he suffers a true wrestler’s fate on his back—he gets pinned with his 66 rating. Ground-and-pound, and maintain top position until you log the KO.
