STRENGTHS
- Aggressive style
- Well rounded
To say that Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon is good with submissions would be wrong. He is great with submissions. The combination of his 87 Submission rating and his deep skill set, which gives him the techniques to catch submissions from anywhere, makes Lauzon one of the fighters to pick for fans of the submission game.
Our favorite was the Level 3 Jumping Leg Scissors to Inside Heel Hook all the way back from stand-up striking range, and with its submission switch to a kneebar and even another submission switch to a toe hold, your opponent’s head will swim.
Ending in the toe hold makes your opponent’s only defensive play to push off and stand up, keeping Lauzon safe and out of a bad position. From the standing position he’s got decent punches, but get the fight to the ground by clinching and pulling guard or taking your opponent down and working positions for another submission. Get to the Open Guard Clinch and you’ve got a Level 3 kimura or Level 2 triangle.
WEAKNESSES
- Kicks
- Muay Thai
- Takedown defense
Lauzon is well rounded, but he has been stopped by good boxing before, and his Muay Thai strikes and kicks are not a threat. Stay back if you are a striker and watch out for his attempts to get the fight to the ground. If he gets inside, get to the clinch and work dirty boxing and knees. It’s best to put him up against the cage and keep it standing, so that all of his strikes become weak and he doesn’t have any crazy reversals or submissions.
He can easily be taken down if you are a good grappler on the top and look to get some ground-and-pound to take the wind out of his grappling. Punish him a little, but then stand up—don’t get sucked into a ground match with this guy. Pound him on his feet.
