ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
WHIP RIGHT STRAIGHT
Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range
Torres throws this cross from most fighters’ kicking range. Sway back and counter from outside with this punch.
PULL GUARD TO OPEN GUARD CLINCH, BOTTOM
Level 2—Single Collar Tie
This is an awesome surprise. From almost any clinch, pull guard and then direct catch a kimura or omoplata. This nullifies good strikers and is great if you rock someone on his feet.
TEKKER 3
Level 3—Back Mount, Top
Obviously this is an advantageous position for any fighter, but Torres smashes opponents with elbows and sets up a Level 2 Rear Naked Choke.
STRENGTHS
- Height
Miguel Torres has a 6’4” reach in a division against a bunch of 5’3” guys.
On top of this obvious advantage, he’s great on his feet and can deal out submissions with ease.
He’s very comfortable off of his back and has some Level 2 and Level 3 strikes from there to go with submissions.
He’s one of the few fighters who can truly punish guys from the bottom position, so mix in a strike or two if they try to posture up, then transition to standing or lock in the submission.
Torres has a fun arsenal of techniques and can win a match from every angle.
WEAKNESSES

Ground strikes
The temptation here is to shoot past Torres’s rangy strikes and take him down.
His takedown defense is poor, and getting up close appears to be a safe way to negate his reach advantage.
But for being a weak wrestler, he is certainly a technical grappler and has a wealth of attacks from the guard.
The best position from which to attack Torres is in the clinch, with big strikes. His clinch grappling is mediocre, so win the transitions and beat him up against the cage.
After it goes to the ground, block his transitions and submission attempts, and work the ground-and-pound.
