STRENGTHS
- Finishing ability
- Slams
- Well rounded
Rory “Ares” MacDonald has only one loss in the Octagon, and that was by knockout at the very end of a three-round war against Carlos Condit.
The rest of his fights have been evenly dispersed between submitting opponents and knockouts, and he has only seen one decision in 13 matches. Go out there with MacDonald and set up power shots—he’s got great cardio—and slam your opponent to the ground. Offensively, he is solid in every category.
Defensively, he is most vulnerable to big punches and kicks on the feet, and getting taken down. In both scenarios, however, he is also very good offensively, so his fights are usually going to be a race to the finish.
He has excellent submission defense and is good off his back, so if your opponent takes you down, relax and work your grappling. Ideally, sweep to the top position or stand up and clinch for a takedown and submit from the top.
WEAKNESSES
- Takedown defense
- Speed
MacDonald has proven to be one of the toughest guys in the division, but he tends to stalk after his opponents. The best gameplan against Rory is keep the fight standing and stick and move.
Shoot in for takedowns—he can be taken to the mat—and work some ground-and-pound. Beat him up there and then escape to standing if he pulls guard, because he is a pretty good submission guy on the ground.
MacDonald lost to Carlos Condit in UFC 115 when he got caught with an inside right hook, and it would be best to try to outbox MacDonald to stay away from his wrestling.
