STRENGTHS
- Size
- Well rounded
- World-class experience
Heath Herring, “The Texas Crazy Horse,” is a big guy, but his greatest strength is his lack of any true weaknesses for a fighter with an overall rating of 84.
He may appear weak in his Submission rating, but as a pro he won a bunch of matches with armlocks and chokes. Also, his 63 rating is canceled out a bit by his ability to submission switch from more than one position. On his feet, he is a decent striker with good kicks—they’re rated even better than his hands.
Defensively, he is strong on his feet and decent everywhere else. He likes to ground-and-pound, so it’s best to take your opponent down with his Level 3 Jumping Double Leg Takedown as a counter if your opponent tries to clinch.
Keep control and transition to the Mount, which is his most powerful position to end the fight. Drop a series of left and right hammer fists from there and you’ll grind your opponent down for a submission.
WEAKNESSES
- Clinch game
- Technical grappling
Dirty boxing and Muay Thai would not be characterized as Heath Herring’s go-to techniques. He’s not going to do much damage to the big opponents in the heavyweight division with strikes in the clinch, and he can be overwhelmed and taken down from there.
He’s not an expert in BJJ, and he can have trouble controlling from the top against better wrestlers or grapplers. His submission rating is low, so he’ll try to wear you down prior to any attempts. Against fighters who are well rounded like Herring, it is best to identify your fighter’s strengths and attack from that angle.
If you are a stand-up guy, throw punches and kicks at Herring from striking range. If you are a grappler, take him down. Either way, put him in the clinch to gain the biggest advantage for strikes and takedowns.
