STRENGTHS

  • Athleticism
  • Former NCAA champion

In a relatively short time, Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis has made a name for himself by showing some ingenuity in the ring. The modified kimura he used to take Submission of the Night honors was a testament to his dominance from the top on the ground and to his proficiency with submissions.

Shoot for the single leg takedown and get on top of your opponent. Davis’s ground striking has the advantage over his stand-up, so work the ground-and-pound on your opponent to soften him up for a submission.

Don’t be afraid to roll with anyone; Davis marks in the 80s for all of his defensive grappling skills and can fight off submission attempts, too. Dig deep and push the action—his wrestling and athleticism are powerful advantages.

WEAKNESSES

  • Muay Thai
  • Punching power
  • Kicks

Phil Davis is another very well-rounded fighter. However, his strengths are definitely wrestling and ground work.

He has not knocked anyone out since joining the UFC, and in this division with so many fantastic strikers, keep the fight standing and exploit the only weakness that Davis might have. He still is very strong, but pick the lesser of two evils. Stand up with him.

In the clinch, throw strikes and advance to dominant positions or push off. He can take you down with a leg sweep very easily, so put his back against the cage to eliminate his takedowns. Work him over on the cage with strikes, and try to knock him out without going to the ground.
