ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
PULL GUARD TO OPEN GUARD CLINCH, BOTTOM
Level 2—Single Collar Tie
Aurelio’s ground game is so good that he doesn’t mind fighting the opponent off his back. If the opponent grabs you in a clinch, try pulling them into Marcus’s guard.
SWEEP TRANSITION TO SIDE CONTROL, TOP
Level 1—Open Guard Clinch, Bottom
After pulling guard from a clinch, or any time you improve to Open Guard Clinch while on bottom, surprise the opponent with a huge sweep that suddenly lands you in Side Control!
DIRECT CATCH TO ARM TRIANGLE CHOKE
Level 3—Side Control, Top
Achieving Side Control is relatively short work for Maximus—rough up the opponenta bit before locking in this lethal choke!
STRENGTHS
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
- Experience
“Maximus” Aurelio was a dominant submission grappler in PRIDE, able to force the tap from nearly any ground position.
His stand-up game isn’t strong, however, so use his speed and durability to bring the fight to the ground as soon as the opponent begins to open up in his exchanges.
Pulling guard from Aurelio’s clinch is another sound way of bringing the action to the mat, and he is extremely slick from the bottom, able to quickly sweep the opponent and place him in severe jeopardy of Aurelio’s top submission game.
If you’re about to lose a submission battle, capitalize on his ability to switch from one submission to the next, prolonging your odds of forcing the tap.
WEAKNESSES
- Strength
- Striking power
- Strike defense
Suffering from poor footwork, low strength, and a lack of striking technique, Aurelio is at a severe disadvantage when fighting most opponents on the feet.
Keep him at striking distance with superior movement speed and sting him with quick strikes that can’t be countered by short takedowns. His strike defense isn’t spectacular, so even quick strikes will eventually add up and rockhim.
Those who face “Maximus” must avoid his lethal groundgame at all costs, or they’ll find themselves struggling in quicksand. Remain patient on the feet and look to counter and punish Aurelio each time he tries to clinch or shoot in for the takedown.
