ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

WEAVING OVERHAND RIGHT

Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range

This strong overhand right is Sherk’s best standing technique. Set it up with the jab or, even better, time it as a counter punch for a knockdown.

JUMPING DOUBLE LEG TAKEDOWN

Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range

Sherk uses this takedown from striking range. Set it up with punches and then execute the game plan.

BACK THROW TO SIDE CONTROL, RIGHT

Level 3—Back Clinch, Offense

Use the back throw to slam your opponent to the mat. You’ll end up in Side Control and in position to follow with strong elbows.

STRENGTHS

  • Wrestling
  • Conditioning
  • Strength

Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk is a very strong, super-athletic lightweight whose only losses in the ring have come from absolute studs (Hughes, Penn, St-Pierre, Edgar).

He’s got excellent defensive skills across the board, so he will always be hard to beat, be it on the feet, on the ground, or by submission.

Sherk is a very frustrating fight to face because he makes it very hard to execute anything with success—all of his losses have been grinds.

His offensive strength lies in takedowns and his ground-and-pound, so use strong strikes on your feet and score the takedown.

He’s got a Level 3 takedown or throw from most positions to go with his rating of 86, so you should see success with your takedowns.

WEAKNESSES

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
  • Clinch game
  • Kicks

As a wrestler, Sherk likes to have a strong base. He’s not going to kick very much, and he’s only mediocre with his technical striking with his hands despite his strength.

He’ll attempt to take you down and end up on top.

If he does, transition to a defensive position to limit his ground-and-pound, then sweep to get top position if you’re able and ground-and-pound him.

He’s difficult to submit, so it’s best to stand up early in the fight.

Stay back from his power punches and pick him apart from outside, then step in with combinations. Get to the clinch and work Muay Thai strikes up close. Again, be wary of takedowns.
