ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
DUCKING RIGHT HOOK
Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range
This is Serra’s knockout punch. Set it up with a flicking jab and fire away.
LEFT HEAD KICK WHILE STANDING UP
Level 3—Double Underhook Cage, Offense
What a sneaky Level 3 technique. If your opponent refuses to oblige you on the ground, stick him with this as you get up.
DIRECT CATCH TO ARMBAR FROM THE TOP
Level 3—Mount, Top
This is Serra’s best submission. Get the Mount, rain down some elbows, get this armbar locked.
STRENGTHS
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
- Aggressive style
- Knockout power
Matt “The Terror” Serra is a tough guy and one of only two people to beat Georges St-Pierre, when he knocked him out in the first round.
Ideally, you’ll want to get your opponents on the ground and flow from one submission to the other, and Matt Serra is best from the top.
He’s got submissions from every angle and can use the Butterfly Guard to a direct catch triangle choke, then switch to an armbar from the bottom.
Strike for power punches and get the fight to the ground. Stay out of the clinch and make this a BJJ match where Serra is comfortable.
WEAKNESSES
- Small welterweight
- Wrestling
- Kicks
Serra is susceptible to kicks and isn’t going to attack with kicks, so stay out of his punching range and pepper him with your feet.
He’s going to have the reach disadvantage against other welterweights, and is either looking for the big knockout in the pocket or using his BJJ.
Clinch up to negate his power, and use clinch strikes to soften him up. Put him against the cage and lean on him.
Use knees and powerful blows to rock him and finish the fight there.
If the battle goes to the mat, you’re playing with fire against a BJJ expert.
