ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
JUMPING DOUBLE LEG TAKEDOWN
Level 3—Both Standing, Clinch Range
Shields shows off some of his top-tier wrestling with this Level 3 takedown from multiple positions.
DIRECT CATCH TO TRIANGLE CHOKE
Level 2—Open Guard Clinch, Bottom
This move goes directly to a triangle choke from the Open Guard Clinch. Pair that quick move with his 89/90 defensive Submission rating and you’ve got a winner.
LEFT/RIGHT OTHER SIDE PUNCH
Level 2—Open Guard, Bottom
Shields can actually do some damage from the bottom with these strikes. Used sparingly they can help to set up submissions.
STRENGTHS
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
- Former NCAA champion
- Conditioning
Shields wants the fight on the ground by tapout, and he has the wrestling and the BJJ to get you there.
Stay away from your opponent’s strikes and shoot in for a counter takedown. Advance your position and work the submission from the top.
It’s all right if your opponent escapes and ends up in dominant position;
Shields is just as good off his back, with some wicked transitions, better ground strike defense, and a quick submission repertoire.
If you’re on the ground and your opponent is standing and refusing to engage, scoot toward him and use a takedown on your get-up from the Up/Down position to end up on top in Side Control and in position for another submission attempt
WEAKNESSES
- Kicks
- Power
It’s very simple. Keep the fight standing against Jake Shields and you will probably have the advantage.
His overall rating of 86 comes from being superb on the ground. His kicks rate in the 60s and his hands aren’t much better.
He’s not going to hurt you in a clinch battle either, unless he takes you down. If that happens, defend and stand up.
He’s not a strong welterweight, and he’s got even less power in the middleweight division.
Grab him in the clinch and work some Muay Thai, then push off and strike from range with boxing combos and kicks, as he can be knocked out.
