STRENGTHS

  • World-class experience
  • Well rounded

Jason “Mayhem” Miller is a submission grappler with decent ground-and-pound. Against a stand-up fighter, pummel in the clinch to the Back Clinch and work the takedown. When you advance to Side Control, work some ground-and-pound there or get the Mount so you can rock Mayhem’s sweet double chop ground strike from the top.

You’ve got the arm triangle submission here—Miller’s best—and it’ll be easy to sink in if you’ve rocked your opponent on the ground from the Mount. Block your opponent’s transitions to keep control if you lose the submission.

From your back, you can catch a kimura or a triangle choke from the Open Guard Clinch, but we liked getting to the Rubber Guard for the Level 2 triangle choke as well. On your feet, use quick jabs to counter your opponent and catch him with a nicely timed right long straight cross.

WEAKNESSES

  • Kicks
  • Speed

Miller is a good submission guy, but he is slow on his feet and not a tight striker by any means. Keep the fight in striking range and use kicks to pepper him from outside.

He is going to want to clinch and try to take the battle to the mat, so shrug off his attempts or use a nicely timed uppercut to counter his takedown attempts. If it does go to the ground, get top position, ground-and-pound him, then work to escape to your feet when he clinches.

Your goal should be to knock him out on his feet, where he is less dangerous. He’s only tallied a few knockouts in his career, and he won’t be able to keep up with the quicker middleweights.
