ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

LEFT OVER STRONG HOOK

Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range

This is a monster left hook in the pocket. Jab and follow for a 1-3. Throw the same punch with your right hand for a Level 3 right.

SUPLEX TO SIDE CONTROL RIGHT, TOP

Level 2—Double Underhook, Offense

Set this up with strikes. Clinch double underhooks and use a technique minor transition to slam your opponent. This opens up a transition to the Salaverry and some Level 3 elbows.

LEFT/RIGHT HAMMER FIST

Level 2—Mount, Top

This is Silva’s bread and butter. Posture up and rock your opponent from Mount with these hammers, then lay it on with Level 3 right and left hooks to finish.

STRENGTHS

  • Aggressive style
  • Finishing ability

Silva has ended careers with his monster strikes, and his famous finish of Houston Alexander in 2007 makes highlight reels to this day. Use strong strikes to hurt opponents and take them to the ground for vicious ground-and-pound.

When you rock your opponents, press the Technique Modifier trigger and press your lefts and rights to unleash a flurry of Level 3 strikes to finish them quickly. He’s more brawler than boxer, and he’s very offensive-minded with decent cardio, so pour on the strikes.

Mix in a leg kick here and there to keep your opponents guessing, but be careful trying to stand up with strikers like Lyoto Machida or Jon Jones.

WEAKNESSES

  • Takedown defense
  • Grappling

You know what you are going to get with Thiago Silva. It’s going to be a war, and not a very technical one.

Stay away from his big power punches and take him down. He struggles from his back and he hasn’t submitted anybody in over five years.

Silva on top of you is a very bad thing, but you on top of him is very good—his power is nullified and you have a good chance of winning the position battle against him with most of the light heavyweights available.

On the feet, box him; don’t slug it out. Stick and move and keep your head covered.
