STRENGTHS

  • Takedown defense
  • Knockout power

Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell is one of the most notable and decorated mixed martial artists out there, and for good reason. Liddell faced, and beat, many greats and defended the belt four times.

He is out there to stand up and bang, and his technique repertoire includes many classic Liddell punches to throw at your opponents. Any opponent you face is going to try to take you down. Keep your head protected, but be ready to sprawl on the shoot.

The Iceman has fantastic takedown defense, which is good, because all his fighting strengths are in his striking. String together combos using quick left hooks and overhand rights to follow for devastating results.

Mix in some leg and body kicks to draw your opponent’s defense down and open up the head. His Level 3 punches shoot out quickly and you can throw them on top of each other.

WEAKNESSES

  • Brazilian jiu-jitsu
  • Clinch game

Liddell submitted one opponent in his hall-of-fame fighting career. Do not get into a position where he is able to square up and throw punches at you. Take the fight inside and clinch—Liddell is very difficult to take down, so press him up against the cage for some dirty boxing to wear him down.

He is not a Muay Thai guy, and most fighters in the division will own him in the clinch. From there, it will be easier to light him up with big strikes, rock him, and take him down to the mat. Use solid transitions to control the fight from the top and get a dominant position for ground-and-pound.

Defensively, he rates pretty good, but he is vulnerable to strikes. Putting him on his back nullifies any opportunity for his powerful strikes, though, so do your striking on the ground.
