Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Rang
This is a classic double leg wrestling takedown, and it lands Sonnen in Side Control. Press the Technique Modifier button and perform a minor transition down to a Salaverry for some nice ground-and-pound.

This slick transition will escape the bottom position and take your opponent down to the matt
LEFT ELBOW STRIKE
Level 3—Side Control, Top
Posture up and smash this heavy elbow
into your opponent
STRENGTHS
- Wrestling
- Constant pressure
- Conditioning
Chael Sonnen definitely holds the belt in trash-talking leading up to a fight, but he has the skills and record to back it up.
He is a tough ground-and-pound wrestler who tested Anderson Silva in a title match before getting caught in a late fifth-round triangle.
Take your opponent down and get on top, where Sonnen is comfortable, and impose your will. Hammer strikes and maintain top control.
When you’re in Side Control, use the Movement stick and the Technique Modifier trigger to turn weak punches into huge elbows from the top.
Sonnen’s in excellent condition, so pour on the offense and keep the pressure on to rock your opponent.
WEAKNESSES
- Kicks
- Clinch strikes
Sonnen is not a Muay Thai practitioner, so watch out for takedowns from the clinch.
Keep your distance and sprawl at his takedowns when you’re at striking range.
He’s not going to damage you very much with kicks and punches from his feet, but he will grind on you if he gets you down to the ground.
Box with him, use the Muay Thai Clinch to work knees, and then take him down for a submission from the top after he is hurt.
He can be knocked out, but he’s not going to get tired. Most fighters will have the advantage in submission battles.
