ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
RIGHT LONG SUPERMAN PUNCH
Level 2—Both Standing, Clinch Range
“The Talent” has some powerful and unorthodox strikes, including this rangy punch, which helps him close in from the outside so he can begin to work his brutal clinch game.
STRONG LEFT/RIGHT KNEE
Level 1—Muay Thai Clinch Cage, Offense
Shove the opponent into the cage in the Muay Thai Clinch, then unleash these punishing knees. These can also be thrown in the regular Muay Thai Clinch, but they gain more weight here.
SUPLEX TO SIDE CONTROL, TOP
Level 2—Double Underhook, Offense
Belcher’s ground grappling isn’t spectacular, but you can quickly set him up in Side Control with this effective wrestling throw from the Double Underhook clinch.
STRENGTHS
- Well rounded
- Conditioning
- Experience
Alan “The Talent” Belcher is a natural fighter who often outworks his opponents by finding and exploiting their weaknesses during the fight. When you want to mix things up on the feet, use Belcher’s impressive footwork to set up your strike combos and power shots.
If you’d rather not risk exchanges with another dangerous striker, transition to the clinch and pour on the offense with brutal clinch strikes instead.
Belcher’s grappling ability leaves something to be desired, but “The Talent” can score huge suplex takedowns from various clinch positions that land him in dominant Side Control on the ground.
When he finds himself stuck on bottom on the ground, he can use technique transitions from several positions to shift into Butterfly Guard, from which he can escape back up to standing.
Belcher’s toughness is without question, so feel comfortable opening up on offense more often.
WEAKNESSES
- Ground grappling
- Takedowns
- Submission defense
“The Talent” doesn’t have many glaring weaknesses, but he does suffer from poor takedown ability and a notable deficiency in offensive ground grappling skill.
Belcher is far more dangerous on the feet or in the clinch than he is on the ground, so it’s usually wise to bring the fight to the mat as quickly as possible.
“The Talent” can be taken out by a well-timed submission, so work at getting him to the ground, passing his guard, and moving into dominant sub position.
Soften him up with some body shots to drain his stamina, and keep wearinghim down to improve your chances of finishing a sub.
If you must fight Belcher in the clinch or on the feet, push the pace and go for body shots to attack his stamina.
