ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
FLYING LEFT/RIGHT KNEE
Level 2—Muay Thai Clinch Cage, Offense
These are Sotiropoulos’s best strikes on his feet. The cage prevents your opponent from moving, and these dynamic flying knees will destroy your opponent’s will—and face.
SWEEP TRANSITION TO BACK SIDE CONTROL RIGHT, TOP
Level 3—Rubber Guard, Bottom
Sotiropoulos is a good grappler from his back. From guard, transition to Rubber Guard and use this sweet sweep to get Back Side Control for a direct catch to a rear naked choke.
UPWARD REAR NAKED CHOKE
Level 2—Back Side Control, Top
Catch this submission from multiple positions from the back. It’s a Level 2 and here’s a submission switch option to a Level 2 armbar from the top
STRENGTHS
- Well rounded
- Conditioning
- Discipline
George Sotiropoulos is a well-rounded grappler and carries an impressive skill set. Though he’s not going to dazzle anyone on his feet, he’s a worker in the clinch and has good cardio, so stay active and try to take the battle to the ground against solid strikers.
He’s finished the majority of his wins in the Octagon by way of tapout, and he’s got a lot of offensive positions on the ground, like his Rubber Guard and Butterfly Guard.
Most every ground position has submissions that can be tried, and when he gets the back it’s bad news.
Maintain control of your opponent. Lock in the body triangle from the rear and open your opponent up with strikes.
If you rock your opponent, the rear naked choke is difficult to escape.
WEAKNESSES
- Boxing
- Kicks
- Slow
Sotiropoulos is a handful on the ground whether he’s on top or bottom. Keep the fight standing and from striking range to nullify any advantage he may have in the clinch.
He’s basically a pure submission grappler. Stick and move, and counter his strong strikes.
Block his clinch grapples and takedown attempts and push off. If you’re using a good kickboxer in the lightweight division, stay back and fire powerful kicks at him.
He’ll have trouble closing the distance and you will be able to pick him apart.
Even if you’re on par with him in the grappling department, exploit his weakness on the feet and keep the fight a stand-up match.
