ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

RIGHT OVER HOOK

Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range

This lead hook is the best boxing punch in Sanchez’s game. Mix it into a combo or lead with it.

TRANSITION TO RUBBER GUARD LEFT/RIGHT, BOTTOM

Level 2—Open Guard Clinch, Bottom

From guard, this is a technical transition to the Rubber Guard that opens up a direct catch to a triangle or a sweep to the mount for some ground-and-pound.

LEFT ELBOW

Level 3—Mount, Top

Sanchez is a “nightmare” from the Mount, Top position. Posture up and throw these elbows, or for even more control, throw them from the grapple block position with an arm around your opponent’s head.

STRENGTHS

  • Grappling
  • Conditioning
  • Aggressive style

Diego “The Dream” Sanchez has a wealth of grappling techniques, and his aggressive style uses offense as the best defense.

Submission attempts like a punch catch to armbar from the bottom when the opponent is standing over him and transitions to Rubber Guard and Butterfly Guard turn being on his back into opportunities to attack.

He has great cardio, so stay busy and push the action, attempting transitions on the ground often.

Use sweeps from the bottom to get into favorable positions on top, then posture up and rain down heavy strikes—he’s got Level 3 elbows from the top in the opponent’s guard and when in Side Control or Mount.

If your opponent gets desperate and gives up the back, use a major transition to Back Mount Face Up position and sink in the rear naked choke.

WEAKNESSES

  • Clinch game

When fighting “The Dream,” it will be a nightmare if he gets on top. Keep the fight standing and turn it into a Muay Thai battle.

Even though he trains out of Greg Jackson’s camp in New Mexico with some proficient strikers, his stand-up is still his weakest point.

With a Footwork rating of 73/74, he can struggle moving in and out of the pocket, and he is weakest in the clinch.

Use Muay Thai strikes and knees to beat him up, and block his transition attempts.

If it does go to the ground, get to your guard and stand up. If he’s on his back, stand up before the submission comes. Back up and the ref will stand him up.
