ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

RIGHT DUCKING UPPERCUT TO HEAD

Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range

Lead with a jab and follow with this uppercut for a classic 1-6 combination with a built-in defensive bob and weave.

JUDO IPPON SEOI TO SIDE CONTROL LEFT, TOP

Level 3—Over/Under Hook

Stevenson can come out of nowhere with this tremendous judo throw from the neutral Over/Under position. Land in Side Control and transition to Salaverry for some elbows or to North/South for a choke.

DIRECT CATCH TO ANKLE LOCK

Level 3—Up/Down, Near

From Open Guard, stand up and watch out for up kicks. Stay close and drop down direct for this Level 3 submission. There’s a submission switch to a heel hook if you need it.

STRENGTHS

  • Grappling
  • Experience

Joe Stevenson is a submission grappler with 15 career wins by tapout.

His ratings aren’t that impressive (he’s much better as a featherweight), but he’s got a great skill set from all positions on the ground and can submission switch in multiple scenarios.

Use striking to wade in close and shoot for takedowns.

If your opponent is jumpy and defending well against the takedown, feint a takedown and throw some strong punches to get him to engage, and then counter strikes with a double leg takedown.

Keep top control and use strong strikes from the top to open up submissions. Get creative, though; it’s not his attribute ratings that are his strength, but his depth of techniques.

WEAKNESSES

  • In the clinch
  • Kicks
  • Small lightweight

As a featherweight, Stevenson is a tough contender and can roll with anyone out there. As a lightweight, he can be overpowered and sees a pretty dramatic drop in his attribute ratings.

Either way, muscle him around on his feet, and work Muay Thai striking and clinch to hurt him.

He doesn’t deal well with dynamic kickers, and he is not going to put together many kick combos of his own. Stay outside and watch for the shoot.

Clinch and press him up against the cage so he can’t take you down, then hammer him with punches, elbows, and knees to rock him. Drop and submit him when he’s rocked.
