ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

LEFT DUCKING UPPERCUT

Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range

Every fight starts on the feet. Work your way in past your opponent’s strikes with this technique power punch and look for a takedown.

SHOOT TO DOUBLE LEG TAKEDOWN

Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range

Wrestle your opponent down to the mat with this powerful double leg takedown. Use it as a counter to easily win the takedown.

DIRECT CATCH TO ARMBAR FROM THE TOP

Level 3—Salaverry, Top

This is a very bad position for your opponent. Rock him with some technique elbows from the Salaverry and lock in the armbar.

STRENGTHS

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
  • Wrestling
  • Experience

Javier “Showtime” Vazquez is a submission specialist and is great defensively, especially on the ground.

He’s got a lot of tools and positions, but certainly one of his best is transitioning into the mounted crucifix (Salaverry) and moving directly to a Level 3 armbar from the top.

He’s not super fast, but he does have decent cardio, so keep the combinations flowing and attempt transitions on the ground.

He doesn’t stand and bang with strikers so don’t try! Playing as Vazquez, you’re in for the long haul in every match, so grind it out on the ground and pick up some impressive wins with his BJJ experience.

WEAKNESSES

  • Clinch
  • Boxing

Vazquez has never knocked out his opponent in his pro career. Stand and strike with him and look for the knockout (though he’s never been knocked out in his pro career, either!).

Land solid combinations to score points with the judges—stick and move.

Sway to set up big counters to end the fight on your feet. Stay away from his submissions on the ground, but you’re fine in the clinch.

Muay Thai knees and elbows up close will do the most damage, but don’t get taken down to the mat.

If you do, defend against his transitions and try to stand up.
