ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES

LEFT/RIGHT HAMMER FIST

Level 2—Mount, Top

Ground-and-pound your opponent for a quick KO with these hammer fists.

DRIVING DOUBLE LEG TAKEDOWN

Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range

Coleman’s impressive wrestling background is put on display with this Level 3 takedown.

DIRECT CATCH TO ARM TRIANGLE

Level 2—Side Control, Top

This choke is Coleman’s best sub. If your opponent escapes the choke, you’re still on top in his Half Guard.

STRENGTHS

  • Ground-and-pound
  • Experience
  • Wrestling

Here’s how the fight should go: Punch feint, takedown, ground-and-pound for the TKO or rock your opponent and lock in a sub.

Mark “The Hammer” Coleman is tied with the third-highest takedown rating in the division, and he has a real-life PRIDE TKO win over Shogun Rua when he took Shogun down and broke his arm. After a strong takedown, utilize his ground-and-pound to soften your opponent up for a submission.

Our favorite submission with Coleman was his arm triangle from Side Control, for a couple of reasons: You can catch it directly from the takedown as you land in Side Control, and if your opponents escape, they don’t reverse it—they pull into Half Guard with you still on top and in position to posture up and strike.

Coleman’s hammer fists are brutal and he does a good job of staying in control on top.

WEAKNESSES

  • Stand-up
  • Cardio
  • Slow

Coleman’s stand-up ranks right at the bottom of the division, as he is not strong in any area on his feet (standing strikes, standing kicks, clinch strikes). His goal is to take you down and ground-and-pound you.

If your heavyweight fighter is a kicker—there are a few—hang back out of range and fire kicks, then follow with combination punches. Whatever you do, keep pushing the action to test his cardio.

Coleman has beach muscles, and those muscles require a lot of oxygen. Make him move around the ring, and test his stamina as he rushes after you. If he gets on top, attempt a submission to interrupt attempts to ground-and-pound, and work your way back to your feet.
