STRENGTHS

  • Champion experience
  • Size
  • Knockout Power

Alistair “The Reem” Overeem has spent his adult life traveling the world and punishing people with his powerful striking style. He has seen success in multiple fight formats, wearing title belts in the kickboxing circuit, K-1, Dream, and now the UFC heavyweight championship.

Overeem sets up all of his victories with excellent striking but does have many wins by submission. Use his technical punches and the most powerful Muay Thai Clinch strikes in the division to hammer opponents. If possible, drive them up against the cage and keep them there to work a quick barrage of clinch strikes.

If your opponent tries to take you down, use Overeem’s guillotine choke to reverse the position and lock one of his best submissions. If the opponent escapes, work a transition back to your feet and get back to striking on your feet.

WEAKNESSES

  • Cardio
  • Wrestling
  • Brazilian jiu-jitsu

Overeem is a big, muscled fighter who throws lots of strikes and kicks. This can test his cardio. Additionally, really his only relative weaknesses are in his wrestling and jiu-jitsu.

He’s going to try to keep the fight standing. Shoot in for takedowns as soon as possible and get on top of him. This will reduce his striking skill set to a couple of weak techniques and make it a grappling match. Block his transitions and keep top control.

He has very good striking defense on his feet but sees a drop-off once it gets to the ground-and-pound position. Good wrestlers will be able to control Overeem on his back and rain down heavy shots to test his chin. He just wants to get back to his feet, so block his transitions to prevent him from advancing his position.
