ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
SUPERMAN JAB
Level 1—Both Standing, Striking Range
This is a quick punch with an added hop for power. Hold the Movement stick away from your opponent as you punch to add the right Superman punch to the 1-2 combo.
LEFT/RIGHT UP KICK
Level 3—Up/Down Near, Bottom
This is Roop’s only Level 3 action in the bunch, but it’s a fast up kick that can rock a striking opponent.
DIRECT CATCH TO TRIANGLE CHOKE
Level 1—Butterfly Guard, Bottom
This sub has two—yes, two—submission switches built in. Transition to an armbar and then back to a triangle if you like.
STRENGTHS
- Height
- Knockout power
George Roop is a 6’1” featherweight in a division with a bunch of 5’7” guys. How he cuts to 145 pounds with a 6’1” frame might be a mystery, but his effectiveness in the Octagon is not in question.
He’s got great strikes and can whip out head kicks, but his true sneakiness lies in a diverse ground game.
From guard, he can attack with strikes, and he uses the Butterfly Guard to set up the triangle choke with a submission switch to an armbar from the bottom, with, yes—wait for it—yet another submission switch back to a triangle.
He doesn’t have the attribute ratings to be a true BJJ superstar, so soften up your opponents with his long kicks and flying knees, not to mention a 1-2 of the Superman punch variety.
Use Roop’s unique style and varied skill set to keep your opponent guessing.
WEAKNESSES
- Power on the ground
- Takedowns
- Clinch grappling
Roop is an interesting fighter. He’s got an incredible cache of MMA weaponry but very few leveled-up moves and only one Level 3 technique.
You do have to be aware of his standing strikes and submission skills, but everywhere in between is a bit mediocre. He has poor takedowns and finds it difficult to transition clinches offensively.
Despite his excellent flow from one submission to another, his strike catches, powerful strikes from the bottom, and his Butterfly Guard, grappling from his back is his lowest-rated attribute.
Keep control of him from Side Control and ground and pound.
Block his attempts to transition to Open Guard or Butterfly Guard—he’s got direct catches to submissions from each.
