OVERHAND RIGHT
Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range
Liddell is famous for dropping his rivals with this devastating right hand. Land this quick punch often—its brief ducking windup lets “The Iceman” slip his opponents’ strikes and counter hard.
CHUCK’S RIGHT STRAIGHT
Level 3—Both Standing, Striking Range
Rock Liddell’s rivals with this long straight right hand from the outside. This fast blow is also available from clinch range, so it’s always at his disposal on the feet.
RIGHT HEAD KICK
Level 2—Both Standing, Striking Range
He’s an accomplished kickboxer, and although he doesn’t throw it often, The Iceman has a fantastic head kick that can be devastating when thrown with proper range and timing.
STRENGTHS
- Takedown defense
- Knockout power
Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell is a dominant striker who uses his strong takedown defense and knockout power to dominate his rivals in both the UFC and in PRIDE.
Though he’s good at defensive wrestling, his striking has always been his main strength—use his long lefts and excellent overhand right to rock his rivals with devastating strikes on the feet.
He also packs plenty of power in his kicks, so batter opponents’ legs to slow them down and make them easier for Liddell to catch in the stand-up battle.
Remain tactical with his striking to preserve his stamina and his ability to defend against the takedown.
Although he can opt to score points by shooting for takedowns, “The Iceman” has a poor offensive grappling and submission game, and it’s best to simply remain standing, punishing his rivals with hard punches and kicks on the feet.
WEAKNESSES
- Clinch grappling
- Ground top grappling
“The Iceman” is a dangerous striker, so it’s best to take him out of his element and grapple with him. Grab him in the clinch or duck under one of his big strikes and score a short takedown.
Liddell’s clinch control is poor, but his takedown defense is excellent, so powerful throws such as suplexes from the Double Underhook clinch are the best ways to bring him to the mat.
He’s also difficult to control on the ground, so focus on maintaining your position as you score points and work his body with conservative groundand- pound.
Don’t go for subs until you’ve worn him out and transitioned to dominant position—”The Iceman” has always been tough to submit, so you’ve got to work at setting up your subs.
Ground-and-pound may be the easiest route to victory against him, assuming you can bring and keep him down.
