ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES
LEFT/RIGHT OVER HOOK
Level 1—Both Standing, Striking Range
Paixao isn’t known for his striking prowess, but these strong hooks can catch his opponents off guard. When used with skill, these technique strikes can entice the opponent to counter and give up the takedown.
SUPLEX TO SIDE CONTROL, TOP
Level 1—Double Underhook, Offense
Paixao has an excellent submission game, but he must bring his opponent to the ground to impose it. If his takedowns are being countered on the feet, go for strong clinch throws like this instead.
DIRECT CATCH TO ARMBAR FROM THE TOP
Level 2—Mount, Top
This powerful submission is one of Paixao’s best from the top. Use his strong grappling ability to pass to Mount or North/South, then posture up into sub position and lock in this tight armbar.
STRENGTHS
- Ground-and-pound
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
Fredson Paixao is a talented Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter who brings strong grappling skills to bear against his rivals in the UFC featherweight division.
Remain defensive against strikes on the feet with Paixao and try to move into close range so that he can shoot in for a quick takedown.
Work at bringing his opponents to the ground so you can impose his powerful submission grappling offense.
Land some heavy groundand- pound from the top, attacking the opponent’s body to soften him up for one of Paixao’s powerful submissions from the top.
His best subs come from dominant positions such as Mount, so struggle to advance position on top so you can bring the finish.
WEAKNESSES
- Standing strikes
- Clinch striking
Paixao lacks speed and skill on the feet, so light him up with fast striking combinations and sharp counters.
Use superior footwork to keep the lumbering Paixao at bay and well out of clinching distance.
He is as weak on the feet as he is strong on the ground, so keep the fight standing and don’t let him enjoy the use of his favorite brand of offense.
Even if he takes you down, know that his best subs are performed from dominant positions such as North/South and Mount—struggle to not give up these disastrous positions, and his offense won’t be as overwhelming on the ground.
Of course, it’s best to avoid the grappling match altogether—use fast, elusive striking on the feet and keep well out of his grasp to prevent this dangerous submission artist from dragging you into his deadly world of submission ground fighting.
