WHEN IN ROAM...

Imagine the antics you get up to between missions during single-player gameplay. Now add other Fixers into the mix; this game mode essentially allows complete freedom to explore Chicago in its entirety, where you and your friends (or new acquaintances; use the online menus to invite whoever you like) can try out a variety of entertaining options. Once a Free Roam session is launched, you appear (randomly) somewhere in one of the six districts. Quickly bring up the world map, locate other Fixers, and arrange a rendezvous.

What kind of antics can you get into during this mode? The following are some ideas, but feel free to create your own challenges, races, and impromptu gunfights!

Cops and Fixers: Band together and start wreaking havoc for Chicago’s corrupt cops; when everything heats up and the police show, work as a team and attempt to battle back. Use all the weapons to hand, have each team member be responsible for specific actions (e.g., one of you needs to disable the chopper), and see how long you can last and how spectacular your carnage can be!

Cops and Fixers (Barricades): Barricades are extremely entertaining to build. Take a fire engine or other large trucks and place them in a pile near an area you want to defend (like T-Bone’s junkyard in Pawnee). Then invite the cops around and see how long you can hold them off for.

Vehicular Manslaughter: Vehicles are extremely entertaining to lark about on; especially hard-wearing trucks like the fire engine. Remember your teammates can ride in the car with you, but the real fun comes from “surfing” on a vehicle’s roof. Can you get all seven players on a roof and the driver to leap a ravine?

On the Hunt: Do you know where all the hotspots, ramps, jumps, cool views, strange location, and other odd areas of Chicago are? Why not beckon your newcomer friends along and point all of these out? Though you can’t pick up collectibles in this mode, you can definitely help out friends who need to find some vital clues to their own investigations, or every drinking game, so they can try them out in their own game.

Crazy Stunts: “Right, four of you start on the west side of Pawnee. Four of us start on the east. Ramming speed!” Or why not invite everyone to jump the Pawnee construction bridge, following the leader in unison? Perform stunts like a game of Horse, with increasingly outlandish demands on each player, until the pressure becomes too much. Have you tried a game of chicken using bikes? Or armored trucks? Or armored trucks with friends standing on the roof?

Parkour Practice: If you know the easiest way to scale the tall buildings with ctOS towers on top of them, why not show your friends how it’s done? How about figuring out the quickest route to take through a set of alleys you’ve been down countless times?

Hard Target: Have you hunted down a man recently? Enable “adversarial mode” and choose one player. Don’t peek at the map, and after joining up, give your “prey” a 30-second head start. Then the chase is on! The “prey” gets to flee to a good defensible place, while the rest of the team search and attempt to kill him. If the prey kills a hunter, the hunter is out of the game, which continues until one side is victorious. Make this a team sport if you wish, but remember that everyone can be hurt, so teams working together risk self-harm!

Treat Yourself: Head over to a pawnshop or gun shop and tool up. You can’t steal from businesses, but you can hang around stores, wreak havoc, or have everyone choose the same weapons and try some marksmanship (e.g., everyone purchase a sniper rifle, drive a vehicle to an extreme distance, and have everyone try hitting a window or tire).

Paranoia: You don’t need to all race to find each other and start some exciting banter; instead you could single out a player and start following them around the city, attempting to make them as paranoid as possible (by exploding junction boxes, or shooting pedestrians with Spec-Ops weapons) and remaining in hiding for as long as possible.

Hide-and-Seek: A less deadly version of “Hard Target,” one player heads off to hide, while the others try finding him after an allotted time.

Cash Run and NVZN: Don’t overlook the two VR games you can play in this mode, too! Cash Run is great for showing your friends how to complete certain runs.

Cars on Demand: If your vehicle app is a little low on cars, trucks, and bikes, race through the city and attempt to find vehicles you haven’t ridden in before. Unlock them in your app.
