City Hotspots OVERVIEW

Access your smartphone’s menu. One of the options is the City Hotspots App. This useful device allows you to complete the following:

In this chapter, we reveal the locations of all 100 city hotspots, along with the interactions you can complete at every one of them. For illustrative purposes, we’ve chosen the wonderful French Baroque Ambrose Theater in the northern part of the Loop.

Checking In

As you move around Chicago and check your map (providing you’ve uncovered the areas by accessing the ctOS control centers and towers), you’ll notice small check-mark icons. These indicate city hotspots. Marks that are filled in indicate locations that you’ve previously visited. You can plot a GPS course to any of them. Adjacent locations within your smartphone’s radius are also shown, whether you’ve found them or not.

When you approach a city hotspot, look for this square plaque, which allows you to check in. Your smartphone app launches at this point.

App Tiles

Select the City Hotspots App and you’re greeted with this screen, which shows you how many places you’ve visited (check-ins) and how many badges you’ve earned. The 30 nearest hotspots to your current location are also listed (which you can separate into lists of those that you have or have not visited), along with icons showing the distance, whether you’ve checked in, and the available gifts.

History and Information

When you access a city hotspot or bring up and select a previously visited city hotspot, a submenu appears, giving you details of the location:

• The name of the location and how many times you’ve checked in
• A history of the location and other pertinent information
• Who the “mayor” of the location is
• Whether gifts have been left by you or are available for you

Leaving Gifts and Earning Badges

The act of leaving or receiving gifts shouldn’t be overlooked; a small prize given to a friendly rival or some badly needed equipment is always gratefully received. The gifts that you can provide or receive include:

• Ammunition for any type of weapon
• Items useful for crafting
• Cold hard cash

You’re also able to earn a variety of badges here (H). These are awarded in much the same way as trophies or achievements and are specifically related to city hotspots. These include badges for:

• Checking in at a specific number of hotspots
• Checking in with a specific total in mind (such as 200 times)
• Checking in at a specific type of hotspot (tall buildings, hotels)
• Checking in within time limits (checking in at two separate locations within a specific time frame)
• Checking in under certain conditions (e.g., a blackout, when it’s raining, or at night)
• Checking in on a certain day (e.g., July 4)
• Checking in with friends (at the same time, or within seconds of each other, or multiple friends)

Becoming Mayor

This is a simple matter of choosing a location and visiting it more times than anyone else over the course of a seven-day period. This may sound simple, but perhaps one of your (real-world) rivals is attempting to do the same at this location! You can view the locations where your friends are mayors by accessing the particular tile in the app.

Why become mayor? Aside from pride, it’s because there are badges to claim! Figure out which friends you can work with (and who can leave you to become mayor) and whom you can mess with to stop their plans!
