If you risk health to pick up drops, like stars, you may take some unwanted damage. You should instead consider moving back down to lower levels to farm stars after your ship has been greatly improved. Upgrades do come at a hefty price, and destroying enemy ships in lower levels becomes very easy and a great way to farm stars.
