The critical acclaim for Planescape: Torment comes predominantly from the storyline and dialogue. Combat is rarely necessary and can be avoided almost every time. To get the most of the game, speak with every NPC you meet and explore the dialogue options thoroughly. You also get more experience from talking and completing quests than from killing.
