The controls and combat in Cat Quest are simple. Touch (if you’re playing with a mouse, substitute “click” for each instance of “touch”) a spot on the screen to move to it. Cats and objects with quests or information to pass along are clearly marked with a chat bubble.
Combat
Touch any enemy to attack it with your equipped weapon. You only need to touch it once to begin auto-attacking. To activate a skill, touch and hold the screen to bring up the skill overlay. Select the skill you want to activate and let it do its thing. The shape on the ground when you select a skill indicates its area of effect.
Watch the ground around enemies for signs of their incoming attack and the area it will affect. Enemies use the same spells as you, so the shapes should look familiar. Enemy skills are generally slower than yours, so you have time to run in for a few hits, or to use a skill, before the enemy attack happens. There’s also a brief window to attack enemies immediately after they use their skill. Defeated enemies drop blue (XP) orbs and gold coins.
Cat Gear and Skills
Touch the cat-eared bag in the lower left corner of the screen to bring up the Armor and Skills screen. Use the Armor screen to equip two types of armor (helm and chest piece) and a weapon. Touch any unequipped item to compare it to your current gear.
Weapons and armor are typically found in chests, both those from dungeons and the ones in the blacksmith’s shop. Obtaining copies of equipment already in your possession increases the stats of the weapon or armor you own. You can’t control what you get from the blacksmith’s chest, so only spend gold there once you have more than you can spend on upgrading your skills.
Skills are learned from the temples found around the world, and most are learned from specific temples. To upgrade skills, find a temple and spend the required amount of gold. Spend some time practicing with each new skill as you acquire it to see which ones are best suited to your play style.
Quests and Side Quests
The main story line is told through quests offered by characters around the world. Side quests pop up on the quest boards located near buildings. Look for circled yellow question marks, then talk to the cat or read the board underneath them. Accepting a side quest puts the main quest line on hold. If you want to drop a side quest, check in at any quest board. The game guides you to the locations you must visit to complete the quests.
Dungeons
One condition for completing many quests is a trip into a dungeon. Dungeon entrances are openings cut into a small stone hill. If you leave a dungeon, all the enemies will respawn when you enter it again. If you’re in a dungeon for a quest, you must defeat every enemy inside it. Use any of the light shafts you find to return to the surface. Explore dungeons carefully, as some will have hidden paths that you must discover in order to find all of the treasure.
