Characters

Beholder is all about its characters: talking to them, getting to know them, spying on them, and turning on them or helping them out (your choice). Talk to characters with exclamation marks above their heads to accept quests. Sometimes these only appear if you express interest in their lives (deeply conversing with them). Other tasks are given over the phone, but we’ll cover that next.

Tasks & Quests

Pick up missions in Beholder by talking to anyone with an exclamation point above their head. Other missions only appear if you take special interest in tenants’ lives, which means digging deep into conversation threads with them. Other missions are given over the phone, from your boss. The missions are displayed on the left side of the screen in the form of a column of icons, with the character’s face associated with that task. Beware that some tasks have time limits; to get the reward from that mission, you must complete it in the time given.

You earn reputation points, money, and sometimes items by completing missions. You spend reputation points by persuading other characters or purchasing surveillance cameras from the State Store. If your reputation dips into negative numbers, you’ll be arrested.

Complete “Papers, Please!”	Option 1: The Coal Barge If Jones Popanedo is a tenant, he provides the task “Great Offer,” where you sell canned fish for at least $3000. Accept to get canned fish, and give it to Nathan Kehler. He returns with $1500 from canned goods. Take this to Jones and offer to earn money. Carl offers up the Schimmers to work for Jones on the coal barge. Talk to Klaus. Jones, Klaus, and Maria all move out and escape on the barge. Option 2: The Holiday Cruise Obtain the cruise tickets from Alloisius Shpak at the end of “Lonely Alloisius” and “Love on the Phone.” Or from Alloisius or Clara Jacque at the end of “Lonely Alloisius” and “Complaints About Clara.” Hand the tickets to Klaus. Fear and Hate	Dora Noel issues this mission. She wants you to find a gun for her.	Complete “Insomnia.”	• Dora wants protection from her husband. Find a gun for Dora. • Mark Ranek, Airel Johnson, and Antoine Grubic all have pistols in their apartments, or you can buy one for $6000. • Give Dora the gun.	$1000 700 RP	48 hours to complete. Faraway Lands	Patrick Stein wants money to travel abroad.	Complete “On the Brink of Expulsion.”	Give Patrick (your son) $20,000, or give him the cruise tickets.	—	48 hours to complete. If you fail, you’re penalized $5000 and 250 RP.
Gathering Data	Alloisius Shpak wants you to gather data on Sarah.	Complete “Difficult Conversation.”	• Talk to Maria Schimmer, or see Sarah cooking. • Talk to Rosa Ranek about Sarah to find out she’s not who she says she is. • Call Ministry to report Sarah, or talk to Sarah and accept her bribe. • Tell Alloisius what you found out about her liking flowers. Great Offer	Jones Popanedo offers to pay you to sell his canned goods.	—	• Give the canned goods to Rosa Ranek (this results in food poisoning at the cafeteria, and Rosa refuses to pay for the canned goods). • Talk to Jones Popanedo. He becomes angry and demands $3000. • Pay Jones, or use RP to diffuse the dispute, or send the Schimmers on a barge as payment. • An alternative is to sell the canned goods to the merchant with the top hat. He pays $1500. This is the same result as if you give Rosa the canned goods.	Unlocks “Making Up.”	—
Glory to the War Hero	This is a Ministry mission. You need to rent the apartment to General Airel Johnson.	—	• Rent an apartment to the general. • You’ll be fined $500 and $1000 for having him in your building. • One day later you receive “The Butcher from Agloe” mission. Horns & Hoofs	You receive an anonymous phone call about moving Leo Gvizdek in.	—	• Move Leo Gvizdek into an apartment. • Purchase a green tie ($195), or steal one. • When Leo asks for advice, persuade him to invest in Horns & Hoofs.	$5500 Leo moves out. Homeland Will Never Forgive	Albert Meineke wants you to acquire the blueprints from Bastian Walner.	Complete “The Hunt for an Engineer.”	• Talk to Bastian and complete “But What If She…” • Give the blueprints to Albert after Bastian gives them to you.	—	—

Local Opposition	This is automatically unlocked. You need to tell Patrick to stop hanging the anti-government posters.	Complete “Chaos and Anarchy.”	• Talk to Patrick about the posters. • Answer the call from Ministry. • Agree to turn your son in, and he will be taken to corrections. • Refuse to turn your son in, and “Chaos and Anarchy” continues. Lonely Alloisius	Alloisius Shpak asks you to find him a girlfriend.	—	Option 1 Dial the number you get in the mail. You’re asked to wait for a callback. They accept the offer and arrive. Tell Alloisius about the girl. Buy a chocolate bar from Nathan Kehler, or steal one. Give it to Alloisius, and he goes on the date. When he returns, ask him what happened. He asks if his girlfriend can stay with him. Agree and get $500, but deny and get $1000. Clara Jacques arrives and moves in with Alloisius. After some game hours, he asks you to get rid of Clara. If you refuse, this mission ends with no reward, Alloisius leaves permanently, you get a call from Ministry, and “Complaints About Clara” unlocks. Then you can evict Clara in one of these ways: • Talk to Clara and demand she leaves, -1000 RP. • Talk to Clara and bribe her for -$5000. • Talk to Clara and ask her. This unlocks “Love on the Phone” and ends this mission. Purchase an illegal item from Nathan Kehler, or steal one, then plant evidence in Clara’s apartment and write a report. Option 2 Comfort Rosa Ranek concerning lonely Alloisius, then tell Alloisius about his new girlfriend. Sarah Wattermach arrives. Greet her and tell Alloisius about her. She moves in with him and eventually he wants info: “Gathering Data” unlocks.	Option 1 unlocks “Drunk and Happy,” “Missing Glasses,” and “Complaints About Clara.” Option 2 unlocks “Gathering Data” “Wedding Preparations.” “Difficult Conversation” and “Love on the Phone” are unlocked either way.	36 hours to complete.
Love on the Phone	Alloisius Shpak’s girlfriend is bugging him. He wants you to evict her.	Complete “Drunk and Happy.”	• Clara asks you to find Alloisius’ cache. If you do this, she leaves. • Talk to Alloisius about family jewels. If asked about the perfect place to hide something, he reveals a location. Tell Clara the location. Martha Is Sick	Anna Stein asks you to find aspirin for Martha.	—	• Steal aspirin from the Schimmers in Apartment 1. • Or buy it from Nathan Kehler. • Or trade Rosa Ranek a cardigan for it. Ministry Order	Ministry wants you to find a way to evict Klaus Schimmer from Apartment 1.	Complete “That Which Is Hidden Will Be Revealed.”	Option 1: Report Klaus • If no book is in Apartment 1, buy illegal item from Kehler, or steal one from tenant. • Place item in furniture in Apartment 1, clicking on red text to add it as evidence. Use this to report Klaus. Option 2: Help Klaus Escape • Talk to Klaus. Truthfully tell him about your task. Offer to help him. Then insist on it. This unlocks “Papers, Please!” • Complete “Papers, Please!” and “Farewell, Motherland” to complete this mission.	$3000 500 RP Unlocks “Completion Report.”	240 hours to complete. No More Propaganda	George Danton calls and asks you to reprogram the propagation machine to send out messages encouraging revolution.	—	Option 1 • Tempt Justas Markovich with a bottle of rum. • Use a screwdriver to open the panel. • Enter the code 21/12/1864 (Great Leader’s B-day). • Set the frequency to 101.9. Option 2 • Follow Option 1 up to frequency entry. • Set the frequency to 81.6 .	—	48 hours to complete. Asking Justas to leave ahead of schedule fails the mission. When talking about the car, you either use 500 RP or $5000 to change the settings. The screwdriver is either in your apartment or purchased. Option 2 leads to a $3000 reward, but Ministry fines you that much. Option 1 earns you the “Bad Time Stories” Achievement.
On the Brink of Expulsion	Patrick Stein needs more money to pay for school.	—	• Give Patrick $15,000, or refuse and be fined the same amount. Let him work in the mines, and you end up sending him abroad. He becomes lost and ends up in the wrong country.	750 RP	48 hours to complete.
Papers, Please!	Klaus Schimmer asks you to get his absentee certificate from the city archive, giving him a way to escape the country.	Complete “That Which Is Hidden Will Be Revealed.”	• Talk to Mark Ranek and ask to help Klaus. Be honest about your intentions during the conversation. • Mark wants whiskey as a bribe. Buy from Kehler or get it from Alloisius (which he gives you if you tell him you’ve heard of him when you first talk to him). • Or bribe Mark with $500 and compliments, or $1000 with no compliments. • Mark leaves the building. Talk to him when he returns to get absentee certificate.	Unlocks “Farewell, Motherland!”	If you choose to bribe Ranek with either whiskey or money, you’re fined $3000 later when the Raneks move out.

Pick Up the Phone	This mission is given automatically. Pick up the phone.	Complete “Local Opposition.”	• Take the roll of fabric (from the mission “Local Opposition”) to blame someone, and make a report for the Ministry of the person you blamed.	Unlocks “Repairs.”	6 hours to complete. If you don’t pass, you’re arrested and the game is over. There are eight total “Pick Up the Phone” missions.
Propaganda	Ministry wants you to hang three banners in the hallways.	Complete “Completion Report.”	• Hang the three banners in the hallways on different floors of the building.	$1000	24 hours to complete. You’re penalized $1000 if you fail.
Repairs	Ministry wants you to repair everything that’s broken in the building.	Complete “Pick Up the Phone.”	• Purchase electrician’s kits and cabinetmaker’s kits for $50 each. • Repair everything that’s broken in the building.	—	48 hours to complete. Failure costs $2000.
Saving a Life	Ingra Birkenfeld asks you to help her leave the country.	Complete “Homeland Will Never Forgive.”	• Give her your clean passports, and she leaves immediately. • Evict her for 1000 RP.	—	—

That Which Is Hidden Will Be Revealed	Ministry wants you to talk to the tenants about Klaus Schimmer.	Complete “Crime and Punishment.”	Part 1 • Talk with Schimmer’s wife. • Talk to Mark Ranek. • Talk to Rosa Ranek. Part 2 • Profile Klaus. Part 3 • Call Ministry and report that the task is completed.	$500 15 RP	48 hours to complete. Costs $1000 if not completed in time. When you talk to Mark, be honest to get three pieces of evidence for Klaus (150 RP). You can ask Alloisius about Klaus during Part 1 for smokes info. There are seven more parts to this mission. The Butcher from Agloe	George Danton wants you to get evidence that the general is the butcher of Agloe.	Complete “Glory to the War Hero.”	Option 1 • Find a medal in Airel Johnson’s apartment, confirming George’s theory. • Call George Danton to refuse to kill the general. • Alert Airel Johnson about the assassination attempt. • Respond to the Ministry’s call. Tick Tock Boom!	Ministry needs you to deactivate the bomb.	Complete “No More Jokes.”	• Get the leaflet from the mailbox. It explains how to disarm the bomb. • Interact with the bomb on the washroom floor to figure out which of three bomb types it is. • Take the clippers from your desk. • Return to the bomb and disarm it by clipping wires according to the bomb type seen in the leaflet. To Go or Not to Go?	Georg Dreiman needs money so he can help you leave the country.	—	• The front cost of emigration is $145,000, but you can lessen the amount by having tickets and friends aboard. Under Suspicion	George Danton wants you to follow Antoine Grubic.	Complete “Danton’s Request.”	• Spy on Grubic and discover him making propaganda posters and reading. • Write a report on these illegal activities. • Answer the Ministry call. • Tell Danton about Grubic, or keep quiet and protect Grubic.	Report on Grubic and get fined $100, but receive $2000 for vigilance.	—

Weird Note	Anna Stein found a note saying you need to call 89-35-76.	—	• This is part of Danton and Antoine Grubic’s storyline. It’s a number to call Antoine. He requests to stay with you for a few days. You can choose to agree or refuse to help. If you let him stay, George Danton asks if you’ve seen him. Give him up or keep him hidden.
