Mobs are monsters and creatures. Animals and Villagers roam the Overworld day and night. At night (or in enough darkness), monsters start to spawn. Following is a detailed list of the more commonly seen animals and monsters, and what they do.
• Cows: Cows can be bred with Wheat and milked. When killed, cows drop Beef and Leather.
• Pigs: Pigs can be bred with Carrots. When killed, they drop Porkchops. You can put a Saddle on a pig to ride it, but the only way to control the direction is with a Carrot on a Stick.
• Sheep: Sheep can be bred with Wheat. When killed, a sheep drops one Wool of its color and Mutton.
• Rabbits: Rabbits can be bred with flowers, Carrots, or Golden Carrots. When killed, they drop Rabbit Hide and Rabbit Meat.
• Chickens: Chickens can be bred with seeds. Chickens drop Feathers and Raw Chicken when killed. A chicken can drop Eggs within 5-10 minutes.
• Wolves: Wolves can be bred with most meats when tamed with a Bone. A tamed wolf can become your companion. If you don’t want the wolf to follow you, tap it to make it sit still. If you travel far enough with a non-sitting wolf and it isn’t with you, eventually it teleports to you if it hasn’t been killed. You can dye your wolf’s collar different colors. Untamed wolves can be hostile if you attack them.
• Squid: Squid drop Ink Sacs when killed.
• Ocelots: Ocelots spawn in Jungle biomes. When tamed, they become cats. They can be tamed and bred with Raw Fish. Ocelots have no drops. Ocelots and cats scare Creepers away.
• Horses: Horses, mules, and donkeys drop Leather when killed. Horses can be equipped with horse armor, and with Saddles to be ridden. Donkeys can be equipped with Saddles, and they offer extra inventory space. Breed horses with Golden Apples and Golden Carrots.
Non-Hostile
Most non-hostile animals can be bred or killed for food. Where they spawn depends on the biome.
• Villagers: Villagers can be found in villages. Villages can typically be found in Savannas, Taigas, and Deserts. Villagers can trade items with you. The prime currency is Emeralds.
Hostile
Hostile mobs attack you and spawn at night or in large, dark areas like caves. If your home has no light, they can spawn inside. To avoid monsters aboveground, sleep through the night in a Bed. Beds are also your spawn point after you sleep in them, as long as they aren’t destroyed.
• Spiders: Spiders in the daytime are not automatically hostile. Spiders drop String and Spider Eyes when killed.
• Zombies: Zombies in the day start to burn unless they’re in a Water source or shade. When killed, zombies drop Rotten Flesh. Zombies also have a low chance of dropping Carrots, Potatoes, and Iron Ingots.
• Skeletons: Skeletons in the day start to burn unless they’re in a Water source or shade. Skeletons have Bows, so they attack from a distance. When killed, Skeletons drop Arrows, Bones, and possibly a Bow, but it’ll be damaged.
• Creepers: Creepers can linger a bit in the day without burning. They blow up if they get too close to you. If a Creeper blows up in a Water source, it doesn’t destroy the surrounding blocks. Creepers drop Gunpowder when killed. If a Creeper is killed by a Skeleton, it drops a random Music Disc that can be played in Jukeboxes.
• Slimes: Slimes, when killed, split into smaller Slimes. They go from Big, to Small, to Tiny Slimes. Tiny Slimes drop Slimeballs.
• Endermen: Endermen don’t attack you unless you look into their eyes. Endermen hate Water. They can pick up blocks and teleport. When killed, Endermen have a chance of dropping Ender Pearls, which can be used to teleport you to where you throw them.
• Witches: Witches throw negative Potions at you. When killed, Witches drop either a Glass Bottle, a Stick, Redstone, Sugar, a Spider Eye, Gunpowder, or Glowstone Dust.
