Crypt of the NecroDancer features three types of controls to offer you the experience that best-suited to your playstyle.
Edge
In this control style, the movement buttons are located on the edges of the screen and feature directional buttons in the top, middle, and bottom of the screen on both sides.
Swipe
This control style doesn’t have any buttons and instead allows you to swipe on the screen in the direction you wish to travel.
Directional Pads
With this control style, there are two separate directional pads at the bottom of the screen, one on each side. While both directional pads control your movement in the same way, they allow you to find your preference of right-handed or left-handed control.
The Interface
Besides movement controls, your interface offers a few other important features. These include the map, items, hearts, gold, diamonds, and the beat indicator.
Map
At the bottom right of your screen is a map that tracks where you’ve been as you travel through the constantly changing dungeons. A blue blip on the map indicates your character’s current location.
Items
The usable items picked up throughout the dungeon are shown in the top left of the screen. This feature shows your currently equipped weapon, as well as usable items—tap to activate them.
Hearts
The number of hearts at the top right of the screen lets you know how much life you have left. Though you start with three hearts, more hearts can be earned throughout the game.
Gold and Diamonds
Crypt of the NecroDancer features two types of in-game currencies: gold and diamonds. Gold is used to purchase helpful items within a dungeon and is lost upon death. Diamonds are permanent and used to purchase permanent upgrades from the lobby shops. However, note that unspent diamonds disappear when you leave the lobby.
Beat Indicator
The beat indicator takes up the bottom of your screen and features several moving dashes that converge toward a heart in the center. The beat of the song lines up with the dashes as they reach the center of the heart. This indicates the time to make your move, so you keep up your gold multiplier. If you stop moving, your gold multiplier resets.
Lobby
The lobby is the main hub room for Crypt of the NecroDancer. In here you find staircases that take you to the various zones, allow you to start local co-op, select a character, start your daily challenge, and return to the tutorial. There are also several rooms. Hephaestus and the Dungeon Master both offer permanent dungeon upgrades, purchased with diamonds. The janitor allows you to remove items from the potential dungeon drop list. Codex allows you to try out various advanced techniques to improve your playstyle. There are also a few doors that you unlock by completing other zones.
