Movement

You move between nodes on a planet’s surface. In outer space, you travel to planets, space stations, and other celestial bodies. The icons that appear on the map indicate possible actions at a location. Some examples are exclamation points for missions, word bubbles for NPCs that will talk to you, and a skull on a red background for a random battle. While flying through space, you may have random encounters with pirate ships.

Combat

There are two types of combat: party and spaceship. Both are turn-based, which means one character or ship performs an action, then the next character or ship acts.

In party combat, the order of turns is displayed at the top of the screen. When it’s a character’s turn, select an available ability or action. The chess piece knight icon opens up non-combat options, such as waiting to take your turn or attempting to flee the encounter.

Set the difficulty of encounters by adding enemies to the fight. While you must defeat a certain number of enemies for most missions, you can break them down into manageable numbers over multiple battles.

For ship-to-ship fights in space, you begin each turn with a number of action points (AP). Your ship’s AP score grows as you discover more powerful DICE engines. Available actions appear below your ship’s health. The cost for performing actions changes as you act. Repeating an action costs twice the AP you just spent to perform that action. Unused AP carries over to your next turn.

Gaining Levels

Earning XP raises your character’s level; however, only characters that are alive at the end of a battle earn XP. Gaining levels adds to the points used to purchase new abilities and boosts the character’s stats. Your points don’t expire, allowing you to save up for the more expensive (and powerful) abilities.
