There’s a lot going on under the hood of Asphalt Xtreme. Here’s what you need to know to rule the road…
Credits and Tokens
Credits are earned by completing races and objectives within races. Credits are used to purchase upgrades, while tokens are used to speed up oil changes and upgrade times (you can also choose to watch video advertisements to do the same and save your tokens). Tokens are also used to purchase special event fuses, event tickets, and pro boxes.
Stars
Stars are earned by winning races in Career mode. You can win up to three stars on each course in Career mode by completing the race and its other two specific objectives. You need to earn 40 stars to unlock multiplayer mode.
Blueprints
Blueprints are acquired from boxes. You can build new vehicles with nothing more than a few required blueprints.
Boxes
Boxes contain tech cards and blueprints. There are five kinds of boxes: 1-card-box, iron, bronze, silver, and gold. All the boxes can contain any card, but only certain boxes have a higher chance of dropping a certain type of card. There are also special occasion boxes: daily boxes, a 4-hour-box, an expert kit box, a specialist box, and a champions box. Boxes are opened as soon as they are obtained. Boxes are free or earned by winning races in Career mode.
Cards
There are three types of cards: elite, material, and part and tech cards. You need these to upgrade vehicles. The only way to access upgrades 5-10 is to use an elite card, but these are only obtainable if all other specs are at level 4 or 9 correspondingly.
Oil
All vehicles have an oil indicator with 20 segments. You must maintain your oil to keep racing and stay competitive. The oil meter is live, so if you let it go below 6 segments and you start a race, you’ll see your performance suffer during the race as it dips lower. Your vehicle is unusable when an oil change is needed. It costs credits and time to get an oil change. You can either watch an advertisement or pay tokens to erase the time penalty. The higher the vehicle class, the more time it takes for an oil change. Switch vehicles if you don’t want to wait, or pay to clear the oil change time.
Nitro
Nitro is king in this game. Everything you do during a race revolves around clean driving and the strategic use of nitro. If you’re colliding with vehicles, picking up nitro power-ups, drifting around corners, performing tricks off ramps, or destroying objects, then you’re filling up your nitro meter.
Every vehicle has three nitro meter segments (unless you have the extra tank booster). Each nitro hit takes one segment per press of the nitro button.
Performing stunts, hitting obstacles, drifting, and destroying opponent vehicles fills the white fill bar below the nitro meter. A full white fill bar grants you one segment of nitro. A good trick to learn early is to drift often and perform stunts and destroy vehicles while in a nitro boost to continually fill up nitro while using it. When the continuous nitro chain is executed nothing can stop you.
Long Nitro
Long nitro is triggered at a key moment after draining a nitro segment. It’s a nitro blast that drains the entire nitro gauge instead of one section and lasts three times longer than a single blast. Press the nitro button as soon as a drained nitro segment reaches the low (red) 10 percent mark. This means that the nitro bar needs your visual attention more so than in previous versions of Asphalt games. You need to take your eye off the race, because you can’t rely on feel, as each vehicle type has its own nitro consumption rate (but for the most part, each vehicle category has the same nitro duration). So, get familiar with the audio cue so you know the exact moment to press nitro again without taking your eye off the course.
Boosters
Before each race you are given the opportunity to purchase boosters to help you get the upper hand in the race. You pay with hard-earned tokens or blueprints. Or sometimes if you’re lucky, they’re free. Keep your eyes open for those free ones.
• Boosted Wheels: These make you immune to hindering terrain. The effect lasts for 15 minutes.
• Nitro Recharger: Shortens the duration for the nitro refill bar to refill, giving you a nitro segment more quickly. This lasts for 10 minutes.
• Extra Tank: Lasts for two hours and costs 25 tokens or 18,500 credits but only gives you a 30 percent capacity boost to your nitro bar.
• Overclock: Acts like a tuning kit by enhancing every performance statistic by a small amount. It lasts for 15 minutes after activation.
• Double Credits: This booster lasts for four hours and costs 50 tokens or 37,000 credits. It gives you double the credit rewards won after each race.
Race Modes
Classic
You versus seven other racers. The first to cross the finish line wins. You win three stars for coming in first, two for second, and one for third. You can also win two additional stars for completing the two special objectives (besides coming in first, which is always the first objective).
Versus
This is a one-on-one race exactly like a Classic race except that you face off against just one racer using a different car. Monster trucks and pickup trucks act as head-on traffic and must be avoided or you risk wrecking your vehicle. You win three stars for first place and one for second place.
Infected
Nitro power-ups make you infected, as does bumping into other vehicles that are infected. Being infected turns you green and gives you unlimited nitro boost (which is activated automatically). Picking up nitro bottles increases bonus infected time. The virus wears off when the infection timer runs out. Wrecking kills the virus immediately.
To gain the most infection time possible, be in last place on purpose, and as soon as the warm-up expires, run into and infect everyone ahead of you. Touch them or wreck the healthy racers while infected to spread the virus, which adds 10 seconds to your infection. If you wreck an infected racer you only gain 5 seconds.
To have a 45-second timer at the start, be in last place while touching the 7th-place racer, then wreck them as soon as you become infected.
Elimination
A certain amount of time is given to the eight racers (190-225 seconds). There’s a 15-second warm-up time, while the elimination period usually lasts 15-30 seconds. The timer turns red if you are in last place. The key is to be in first when the timer runs out. You get three stars for first but get two stars if you are eliminated and in second place or one star for third. A couple of bonus stars are available, and one is usually for a perfect run.
Knockdown
You face seven other racers, and the goal is to knock down (wreck) more target vehicles than the competitors. The targets are other cars that travel along the course, which are randomly spawned. The challenge ends when the maximum number of knockdowns is reached or when the timer runs out, in which case the player with the most knockdowns wins.
If you are tied when the timer runs out, then you enter Sudden Death mode and 30 seconds is added to the clock. The first one to do a knockdown wins. If no one gets a knockdown in that time, then whoever was ahead of the other in the course wins.
Getting more knockdowns than any other racer earns you three stars. There’s no second or third place prize, but accomplishing bonus objectives can earn you additional stars.
