All abilities have benefits, but for your early games, consider the following choices: Trapping, Botany, Strong, Melee or Ranged, Hiding, Athletic. Trapping is great because allows you to make fire without a lighter, as well as to trap and skin animals for meat. Botany provides additional food from scavenging and ensures the food is safe. Pair Strong with Melee or Ranged (or both), since combat will happen eventually. If you’re not the confrontational type, choose Hiding or Athletic, since both expand your options to avoid conflict.
If you want to choose flaws so you can add abilities, go with Insomniac, Metabolism, and Myopia. Each of these flaws can be managed provided you pay close attention to your status indicators.
