Pick one end path for tech choices and stick to it. If you jump around trying to get everything, your army of almost swordsmen, catapults, and battleships will be overwhelmed by actual swordsmen, catapults, or battleships. You can always fill in your Tech Tree after your enemies are ground to dust.
