Battlefield Hardline Guide › Walkthrough

Episode 1: Back to School

With new partner, Khai Minh Dao, Nick Mendoza heads out on assignment to find Tyson Latchford. After a tour of a Miami neighborhood, Khai comes to a stop near the projects. No need to spook the locals, the detectives will hoof it from here.

Location: Miami

Detective: Nicholas Mendoza

Partner: Khai Minh Dao

Case File(s): The Hot Shot File

Evidence

Suspects with Warrants: Lawrence Kent

Main Objective: Investigate Tyson Latchford.

OBJECTIVES:

Find Brix

Interrogate Brix

Get to the Projects

Avoid Detection

Interrogate Tap

Scan and Analyze Tap

Follow Tap to Find Tyson

Save Tyson

Investigate the Room

Get to the Car

Look Around

While cruising the streets, use the left stick to look around and take in the sights.

Find Brix

Exit the vehicle and follow Khai through the old neighborhood. Once Brix is spotted across the street, approach the trio of men.

Freeze the suspect by holding down the Show Badge button as you train your taser on him. His friends flee the scene as Mendoza asks some questions.

Freeze

Freezing suspects with the detective badge is a great way to take down one to three bad guys in a non-lethal manner. A white shield icon with an exclamation point indicates the person will put up his hands with a flash of the badge. Keep an eye on the criminals, since they go after their gun if left uncovered. Move the reticle between all of the suspects as you approach.

Interrogate Brix

When instructed to do so, approach and cuff him. The detectives find out what they need through some quick questioning.

Get to the Projects

Continue down the sidewalk toward the Arcola Projects before spotting Tap’s crew to the right.

Avoid Detection

Follow Khai across the street, taking cover behind the wall alongside her. The way is blocked ahead, so follow the detective up the driveway and through the small gate.

Avoiding Detection

Watch the vision cones on the minimap. They clue you in on where you can go without being seen. Alert Meters above suspects’ heads also let the player know when the situation is getting more dangerous.

Approach a bigger gate on the right and open it. Click the Sprint button to keep up with your partner, vaulting the fence when the prompt appears.

Sprint

By default, clicking the Sprint button switches to a run. This can be changed in the Gameplay menu in Options. Switch Agent Sprint to Hold button, to require the button to be held to sprint. Let go, and the character walks.

Run to the right and crouch through the busted fence. Continue behind Khai until you find a few of Tap’s guys. Crouch down, let the first pass, and then weave around the dumpster ahead. Move quietly, but quickly, to avoid detection. Alert Meters appear, but as long as you move silently, everything is fine.

To the right, a thug blocks the path. Aim further down the alley and tap the Throw Distraction button to toss a shell casing. Follow Detective Dao as she cuts through the apartments on the left.

Throw Distraction

Be sure to place the reticle where you wish the shell casing to go. If you throw it between the detectives and the criminal or hit him with it, you are detected. A question mark above his head indicates he is investigating the noise.

Crouch as you near the courtyard ahead, as you spot two men to the right. They block the path and must be separated, so that they can be taken down one at a time.

Toss a shell casing to the left and the thug looks that way. Now you can sneak around to the right and get behind the other guy. Perform a melee attack when within range to quietly knock him out. Now approach the first guy and take him down in the same manner.

Interrogate Tap

Continue along the path until you find Tap, as his buddy ditches him.

Scan and Analyze Tap

As the detectives keep watch over Tap from a nearby rooftop, you are introduced to a valuable piece of equipment, the Scanner. Tap the Scanner button to equip the device.

Move the reticle onto Tap, standing next to a dumpster on the left, to tag him. This allows the detective to follow the suspect. Hold the Jump button to analyze him. A full analysis of a tagged person identifies suspects with warrants or high-value targets.

Follow Tap to Find Tyson

Once Tap enters the school, scan as many criminals as you can—inside and out. Look for the blue diamonds and simply move the reticle over each one.

After Tap and Tyson’s short conversation, two vehicles pull into the courtyard on the left. Scan the criminals inside each one.

Motley Crew

Tag all criminals visible from the rooftop in Episode 1: Back to School. Here is a list of all 17 guys:

• Two guarding entrance

• Three just inside the school

• One upstairs to the right

• Three upstairs near the windows on the left

• Eight inside the two vehicles that pull up

Save Tyson

Follow Khai into the nearby roof access and run down the stairwell. Two thugs hide behind cover ahead. Flash your badge to cause them both to freeze. Keep them both frozen as you approach and cuff them. There is no way around it, the second guy goes after his gun and your partner takes him out.

Freeze Multiple Targets

An Alert Meter slowly fills as a suspect gets more dangerous. Do not let this meter fill completely before aiming your weapon at the agitated thug. Move your reticle between the criminals to keep them all under control.

G17 Pistol

Some of the criminals inside and out of the school drop a G17 Pistol. Be sure to pick one up to add it to Tactical Gear.

By the Book

Use a non-lethal takedown on 10 criminals to earn this Achievement / Trophy. If played correctly, this is easily obtainable during the first episode.

Descend another set of stairs and approach the guy at the next doorway. He has a warrant, so quietly arresting him gives extra rewards. Flash the badge to freeze him and then cuff the criminal.

As you enter the courtyard, as long as the criminals were scanned, their positions should all be shown with chevrons. Quietly move to the far right, flash the badge at the lone thug, and cuff him.

Lawrence Kent

As the two vehicles enter the school courtyard, scan the right, rear passenger in the first car to find Lawrence Kent. Take him down in a non-lethal manner to gain Expert Score points. As long as you scanned him, a handcuff icon indicates his position. Quietly approach him from behind and arrest him.

Expert Levels

Taking down criminals non-lethally gives the player points toward his or her Expert Score. Completing objectives, capturing suspects with warrants, and scanning evidence / objects also earns the user points. Earn enough points and your Expert Level rises to a maximum of 15. Each time you reach a level new items are unlocked in Tactical Gear. On top of that, three Achievements / Trophies are earned at Levels 5, 10, and 15.

Weave through the obstacles in the courtyard as you move toward the school entrance. Freeze the two guards and arrest them before entering the building.

There is only one guy in the first floor; approach his location just inside and handcuff the suspect. Meet up with your partner at the stairs on the left side of the school and move up to the next level, where four more guys hold out.

Use the Scanner

Bringing up the Scanner gives a better idea where the criminals are than the chevrons. Use it to see how they are grouped.

Take care of the lone criminal in the right room. Turn around and flip a shell casing across the hall to attract the attention of the nearby thug. Arrest him before quietly moving down the hallway into the central area.

Take cover behind the right wall and toss a shell into the room across the hall. Handcuff the guy who comes to investigate. Move into the classroom on the right and take down the final suspect.

Investigate the Room

Enter the room across the hall and equip the Scanner. Analyze the document on the nearby desk to log the first piece of evidence. Another document can be scanned on the right counter, next to the printer.

The Hot Shot File Evidence

Scanning the three pieces of evidence for The Hot Shot File Case File is part of the first episode. Later on, evidence is tougher to find, though assistance is given. The controller rumbles when one is nearby. Equipping the scanner gives you the distance to the closest evidence, as well as how many remain in the current area. Completing the Case Files gains the player valuable Expert Score and better gear so be sure to keep an eye out for evidence.

Interacting with the case on the table ahead gives you access to your Tactical Gear—in case you wish to make any changes.

Finally, move into the next room and analyze the trace on the table to complete The Hot Shot File. At this point, Khai opens a nearby door. Move inside and open the laptop.

Keep Digging, Detective

Complete any case file in single-player. Scan these three pieces of evidence to earn this Achievement / Trophy.

Get to the Car

Return to the staircase and head downstairs. Three thugs chat at the hall intersection. Quietly, but quickly, walk toward them until all three are within range of a badge flash—indicated by the white exclamation points above their heads. Use it to freeze them until you can cuff each one.

Take cover behind the bookcase near the entrance and take note of the final three criminals’ positions. Use shell casings or your badge to take them down, as you move toward and enter the vehicle that is parked on the road to the right.

870P Magnum Shotgun

One of the guys in the schoolyard, after Mendoza finds the evidence, is equipped with an 870P Magnum. This is worth grabbing for a powerful, short-range weapon.

Once control is regained, knock on the door and then kick it open. When directed to do so, hold the left stick Up to apply pressure. At this point, you are only able to fire your handgun. Bad guys enter through the doorway and the windows. Quickly take them all down as they approach until the episode is complete.

Pressure Applied

Complete Episode 1: Back to School.
