Extraction Point |
- Rescue takes place in the Train Depot key location on Derailed, making for an excellent “breach and clear” situation. The hostages and the criminals guarding them are held up inside the depot’s main building which happens to be full of containers, shelving, boxes, and equipment. This doesn’t make cover any more difficult to pay attention to when looking for defenders, but it does mean that the enemy could be anywhere and running in blind is sometimes your only choice. Use grappling hooks to get to the roof and drop in through the skylights, surprising the enemy. Or, take out a couple with a battle rifle before your team’s ground forces come bashing down the door to clear out the rest and rescue the hostages. It may seem like you have to deal with all of the enemies inside the warehouse, but remember that there are plenty of places to hide outside so that they can either catch you coming back out with a hostage or can take you out while you’re paying attention to entering the building. It is a good idea to take the long way around the building to the backside where it is possible to surprise the criminals posted up outside. In fact, it is a good idea to make sure the outside is completely clear before any of your team members enters the warehouse. This secures that you don’t get shot from behind and that your escape route is relatively safe.
- When playing defense on Derailed, you must pay attention very closely to where the hostages are located. There is cover there, meaning the enemy can use this to conceal their approach even before starting the pick up on either of the hostages. In the larger part of the warehouse, it is good to have two players hidden in sight of the hostage while another is in the smaller hostage room barricading himself with tripmines or listening closely to footsteps coming around the corner. Right at the beginning it is good to send one of your teammates to the roof, hidden and watching for anyone that tries to climb up, rather than for what’s going on down below. It’s easy to get sniped while on the roof, so paying attention to only the roof for at least the first minute is important. After that first minute, it’s okay to jump down and find a hiding spot outside the warehouse near the exit that you think they might come out of. This could be any of them, but you have to trust your gut and listen to where the action is happening. If the enemy is able to enter the building, it is far more important to retreat back to their extraction and try to catch the police as they exit the building instead of starting a firefight and risking killing one when there are two others ready to shoot you.
- In the first round, it is a perfectly safe tactic to rush around the perimeter of the building and attempt to cut off any police going straight for the fast capture as they scramble to the closest entrance. This tactic should never be attempted twice in a row because if the opposing team expects the rush even one little bit, it could cost your entire team’s lives before the first minute has passed. Derailed is wider than most Rescue maps, so it lends itself well to either the rush or the lockdown tactic. This map, more so than others, is all about adjusting to the current situation. If one enemy player has broken through your lockdown tactic it is important not to scramble. If the whole enemy team has broken through, whether they killed any of your team in the process or not, it is a good idea to get out of the defensive position and surround the building, ready to attack rather than attempting to hold your ground. Every situation is different, but as long as you use the train cars and shipping containers to conceal your movement, you can gain the upper hand at any moment.
- Both hostages are being held inside shipping containers open on both sides. The first is located in the large main room of the warehouse and the other is in a smaller office type room. It is possible to cover both hostages from the large room, but you may want to at least set traps or be ready to surround the small room if you are going to leave it unguarded. When playing as the cops and going for these hostages, carefully peek inside to see if a criminal or two is sitting right next to the hostage. If there’s no enemy there, use the cover of this container to move through it and check the other side for any hiding enemies before picking up the hostages. It’s incredibly difficult to tell if there is someone on the other side of the open door, and it is important to check because, even though it is hard to see from back there, the enemy will be listening for you.
- Grappling hooks and ziplines are your best friend when playing on this map. If you’re the police and your team manages to pick up one or both of the hostages, there is a good chance that there are at least a few enemies right outside the exits waiting for you to leave. Try hooking the skylight above you and climbing to the roof because from there you can zipline in any direction, allowing you to safely land and put some distance between you and the enemies that were waiting for you. It is also good to equip a gas mask and throw gas grenades near the hostages. The shipping containers are incredibly slim and if there’s a bad guy in there, you completely disorient him, giving you a grand opportunity to move in and take him out. Move fast because once he’s gassed he will alert his friends.
