£: 2500 (Max)

Location: Lambeth

Solve the mystery of the body found on the banks of The Thames. This time, Artie and Henry Raymond are nowhere to be found; you’re on your own. Meet the worker on the corner (1) in Lambeth near The Thames. He screams for help and something about foul play and then walks off.

Objective: Inspect the unidentified body

Investigation Area: Riverbank

Clues: 3

Riverbank – Body: Find the dead body (2) to the southwest from where you start the mystery. Jump down off the road wall to the riverbank below. You can find the body in the mud near a small dock. It’s a male body dressed in the manner of a wealthy businessman. He is wearing one shoe. He has sustained multiple fractures indicating a fall from a great height. There’s nothing on the body that can identify him.

Near the dead body are drag marks that lead toward the water but stop at an impact mark. If you look up with Eagle Vision from the impact mark you can see a “fall” trail from the rail bridge above.

Riverbank – Coat: Directly under the rail bridge, near the road wall and a small campfire is the discarded coat (3). It is a rich man’s coat with a name sewed in the lining: Matthew Killian. You can assume this is the victim’s coat and name.

Riverbank – Pocket Watch: Climb to the top of the rail bridge and find this silver watch (4) on the north edge from where the body possibly fell. With Eagle Vision, you see a clue that says the edge of the rail bridge was too low for the impact mark made. So the body had to be higher, which means it came from a passing train. The watch is broken and the hands have stopped just after midnight, marking time of death.

Suspect: 2

Vagrant: Talk to the vagrant (5) under the bridge standing near a tree. Talk to him about the Body, Shelter, and Midnight. He heard a splash so he pulled the body out of the shallow water. He was dead. After asking him about Shelter, ask him about the Coat. He admits to stealing it since the dead man no longer needed it. He says the midnight train is the 616 and stops in the station down the road. Hurry and it might still be there.

Objective: Continue your investigation

Investigation Area: Victoria Train Station

Suspect: 1

Trainmaster: Talk to the trainmaster (6) inside Victoria Train Station near the north stairs. Talk to him about train 616. He tells you to hurry; the train is leaving now. Check out your Mini-Map and you see five more investigation areas (the train cars) become available to the east.

Objective: Continue your investigation

Investigation Area: Sleeper 2

Clues: 2

Sleeper 2 – Handbag: Race to the train to the east before it leaves the station. Once on the train, make your way to the southernmost car, Sleeper 2 and begin your investigation with the Handbag (7) on the floor next to the suspect. It contains a letter from Viv’s sister. She talks about a nice scheme Viv is pulling off and is interested in pulling off a similar scheme.

Sleeper 2 – Note: The note (8) is located on the other side of the suspect from the handbag and near a door. It’s a handwritten note, “Come to the restaurant carriage quickly.” This note becomes key to the investigation so keep this in the front of your mind as you continue.

Suspect: 1

Vivian: Talk to the lady (9) on Sleeper 2 about Last Evening, Killian, Letter from Sister, and the Note. She says last night she had some drinks with some gents and then retired to her suite and someone slipped that note under her door a few minutes before midnight. Only Ryan and Wolf were there and both were drunk. She said she did talk to the rich fellow and wonders if something happened to him. When asked about the letter, she admits to flirting with rich folks and that the barman colludes by sliping them a mickey. She takes them back to her room and they nod off before she has to do anything shameful.

Objective: Continue your investigation

Investigation Area: Sleeper 1

Clues: 2

Sleeper 1 – Derringer: This gun (10) is located on the floor on the left side of the train under a seat. It’s a small Derringer, ivory-plated with a chamber for two bullets, one is missing.

Sleeper 1 – Letter: This letter (11) is located on a seat on the right side of the train in Sleeper 1. “Killian will be on the 616 train to Cardiff to sign the papers. You must prevent him from signing them at all costs or we shall be ruined.” This looks like good motive to kill someone.

Suspect: 2

Sam: The valet, Sam (12) stands in a corner on the left on Sleeper 2. Ask him about Last Evening and Killian. He says that Mr. Wolf had a few to drink with Mr. Killian then Vivian invited herself over to have a glass with them. Mr. Wolf was buying many drinks for Killian and they started to argue but Killian ended up leaving with Vivian around 11:30pm. Mr. Wolf became very tired but only had one drink and retired well before midnight. Sam stayed in the dining car for a few drinks with the barman.

Angus Wolf: Mr. Wolf (13) stands in a corner on the right, not far past the letter on Sleeper 2. Ask him about Last Evening, Valet, and Killian. He said it was a surprise to see Killian on the train; they’ve had previous business dealings. He confirms they had a few drinks together and they argued a bit over business and money. He confirms that Killian and Vivian hit it off famously. He also raises the point that Sam, the valet, is very strong, making him useful in many situations. However, do not jump to conclusions, there are several men strong enough to lift a man to the top of a train.

Objective: Continue your investigation

Investigation Area: Passenger Carriage

Clues: 1

Passenger Car – Shoe: Climb to the top of the Passenger Carriage to find this Shoe (14) on the rooftop. Be careful; the train is moving now. The shoe is caught on a bolt and it matches the one found on the victim. The body was obviously thrown from atop this car.

Suspect: 1

Luke: Luke (15) stands in the far right corner on the Passenger Carriage. Noises on the roof woke him up at night (referencing the shoe clue above). He points out that you’d have to be a strong fellow to drag someone up on the roof to push them off. He acts like he didn’t know Killian is on the train, but he used to work for Killian at the foundry and that none of the workers have ever seen what he looks like. He confirms that Vivian has a scam going on with the bartender. Talk to him about Midnight and he says Vivian had another one of her visitors in her compartment then.

Objective: Continue your investigation

Investigation Area: Restaurant Carriage

Clues: 3

Restaurant Car – Sleeping Pills: The restaurant carriage is actually two connected carriages. The first car you enter has no clues, but one suspect. Continue to the second car to find the pills (16) on a corner shelf on your right next to the entry door. The bottle is half empty.

Restaurant Car – Newspaper: On the second restaurant car you can find this newspaper (17) on a chair at a dining table. It’s an article about Matthew Killian’s efforts to close an enormous business deal. Killian is well known for replacing workers with machinery. There’s a likeness of Killian that matches the victim.

Restaurant Car – Pamphlets: This pamphlet (18) is in the second restaurant car on a table on the right. It’s an anti-industrialist pamphlet.

Suspect: 2

Ryan: Ryan (19) is the bartender and stands near the exit on the first restaurant car. Talk to him about Pills, and the Scheme. He says he keeps the sedatives at the bar for passengers that need to sleep regardless of the noise from the train. He admits to slipping the pills in each Killian’s and Wolf’s drinks last night and then Vivian would pick the richest one.

Peter: Peter (20), the train steward, is standing at the end of the second restaurant car. Talk to him about Last Evening, Killian, and Vivian. He said nothing was unusual until you arrived with the story of a murder. He was tiding up in the passenger cart when Vivian ran by him at midnight. She thought someone was looking for her, prompted by the letter she received.

Investigation Area: Restaurant Car 2

Accuse:

Peter: Peter (20) is big enough to have lifted Killian to the rooftop. Peter was a former employee of Matthew Killian, put out of work by Killian’s mechanization. It was a last minute crime as he didn’t know he was going to be on the train but recognized him from the photo in the newspaper.

Motive

Industrialist Matthew Killian was drugged and thrown from the top of a moving train by his former employee, Peter Jespers! Put out of work by the mechanization of Killian’s factory, Peter found employment as a humble train steward. However, one evening Peter realized that Killian was on his very train (prior to this journey Peter had never seen Killian, but now recognized him from a recent newspaper article). Peter, knowing that frequent passenger Vivian often swindled wealthy fellow passengers, waited until she lured Killian to her compartment. He cunningly arranged for her to be called away by means of an anonymous note. Peter then used his considerable strength to lift the drugged magnate and drag him to the top of the train, whence he threw him to his death at midnight! Killian’s rival, Angus Wolf, had hoped to get Killian so inebriated as to prevent him from participating in a business meeting on the following day, but Wolf himself fell afoul of the drugged brandy and slept through the entire episode! As for Peter the murderer…perhaps he meted out justice, in turn he will now meet justice himself!
