Death Stalks The Colonel

Location: Abbot’s Cocoa, Southwark

Find Artie and Henry Raymond (1) standing outside the Abbot’s Cocoa factory in Southwark. In this case, you must determine which bullet struck and killed the former colonel.

Objective: Inspect Colonel Prescott’s body

Investigation Area: Munitions Factory

Clues: 7

Munitions Factory – Prescott’s Body: Head to the east a block and find the colonel’s body (2) near a fountain in a small, short-walled courtyard at the Munitions Factory. He was killed with high precision by a single bullet passing through his heart and exiting his back at 12 o’clock.

Munitions Factory – Dynamite Crates: Find empty munitions crates (3) clearly marked “Prescott Munitions No. 408.” These are located just outside the courtyard wall near the body.

Munitions Factory – Bloodstain: This bloodstain (4) is near the colonel’s head. The spread is consistent with the direction of the bullet.

Munitions Factory – Banner: This banner (5) is located next to the blood spray and the body. The banner is for the 11th Regiment of Foot, marked “Gold Coast—Ashanti Campaign.”

Munitions Factory – Feather: This feather (6) is located at the base of the fountain. It’s a single white feather, which in WWI was a symbol of cowardice in the British army.

Munitions Factory – Clock: This clock (7) is leaning on the courtyard short wall in the trajectory of the bullet path. There’s a hexagonal-shaped bullet lodged exactly below the numeral 12 and the clock is still running. With Eagle Vision you can see the bullet trajectory and where it originated.

Munitions Factory – Bullet Hole: This hole (8) is located in the park bench next to the clock. The second bullet and trajectory further confuses the case. Each bullet’s trajectory crosses the victim’s body. You need to determine which one killed him and which one missed.

Suspects: 2

Jonas Hassett: Speak to Hassett (9) standing against the factory wall in the courtyard. He’s the foreman and a veteran. Talk to him about Prescott, Banner, Shooting, and the Clock. He was proud to have served under the colonel. He heard two shots at the stroke of noon on his way to the factory. The banner was to honor those who fell under his command at an operation gone bad in the war. This story introduces motive to harm the commander. Possibly a disgruntled solder?

Frederick Abberline: Speak to Abberline (10) standing near the north entrance of the courtyard. Talk to him about the Shooting, Factory, the Clock, and the Suspect. He says some young lads were playing with a pistol they found across the street and a bullet went astray through the fence and possibly through the victim. He also says the factory was opened to give those soldiers that returned from the war a place to work.

Investigation Area: Shop

Suspects: 1

Curtis: Speak to Curtis (11), the shop owner inside the shop across the street from the crime scene (where the bullet trails lead). Talk to him about Prescott and the Military. He said the colonel and he used to joke insult each other every morning. He was a lieutenant under the colonel’s command in Africa. After you investigate the rifle in his attic, ask him about the Attic. He admits to selling stolen rifles. Talk to him about the Whitworth (the brand of rifle). He said he used that gun for Prescott’s shooting challenge this morning.

Investigation Area: Courtyard

Clues: 5

Courtyard – Beer: The courtyard is the area between the shop and the factory including the alley beside the shop. The beer puddle (12) is in the street between the factory and the shop. Once you’ve investigated all the clues and suspects in this area, follow this beer trail to another investigation zone, the Barrel Depot.

Courtyard – Bullet Hole: The bullet hole (13) can be found in the wooden fence blocking the alley next to the shop. It indicates that the bullet exited the courtyard behind the fence.

Courtyard – Target: The target dummy (14) is hanging on the backside of the wooden fence at the end of the alley next to the shop. Another indicator that the boys were actually performing target practice.

Courtyard – Mark: The mark (15) is on the ground behind the wooden fence with the bullet hole and the target dummy. It’s the place where children stood when firing at the target.

Courtyard – Impact Mark: The impact mark (16) is on the ground behind the shop. It appears a small, heavy object may have fallen here, perhaps a revolver. Use Eagle Vision to display the “Fall” trail. Follow it to discover the attic.

Suspects: 1

Earl: Speak to Earl (17) the young orphan boy who was shooting the target in the alley beside the shop. Talk to him about Shooting and the Gun. The boys found the revolver underneath the lumberyard window and shot at the target from the spot near the fence. The impact mark supports his explanation.

Investigation Area: (Shop) Attic

Clues: 1

Attic – Whitworth Rifle: Enter the open windows at the top of the shop to access the attic. Find the rifle (18) on the floor near a gun case. It’s the first sniper rifle with astonishing accuracy. It smells as if it’s been fired in the past few hours. “11th Regiment of Foot—Gold Coast” is carved into the stock. Most importantly, it has a hexagonal barrel. This proves that Curtis shot the clock but, as the bullet hole is below the number 12, his shot didn’t kill the victim.

Investigation Area: Barrel Depot

Clues: 4

Barrel Depot – Empty Barrel: Follow the beer trail to the Barrel Depot a couple of blocks west of the crime scene. Investigate the barrel (19) near the stack of barrels inside the depot yard. You find a round hole in the barrel and a spent revolver bullet inside matching the orphan’s gun, thus proving the kid is innocent.

Barrel Depot – Backpack: to the west of the barrel with the bullet hole is a backpack (20) with a flap that bears the insignia of the 11th Regiment. This is near the stairs that lead to the bulkhead where you can find the goose. This proves that someone in the colonel’s regiment was here and near the source of a white feather.

Barrel Depot – Goose: to the west of the backpack and down the stairs is a dead goose (21) on the bulkhead. The white goose was partially plucked (remember the feather at the crime scene).

Barrel Depot – Medicine: Find the medicine bottle (22) on top of a barrel near the alley between the barrel depot buildings. The drug is for the treatment of trypanosomiasis, a disease transmitted by tsetse flies in Africa. This is where the failed battle occurred.

Suspects: 2

Bennett: Speak to Bennett (23), the delivery cart driver and the first suspect you see when you enter the barrel depot yard. Talk to him about Prescott, Beer, and Samuel. He found the bullet hole in the barrel he was delivering. After talking to him about his helper, Samuel becomes a suspect you can interrogate.

Investigation Area: Barrel Depot

Accuse:

Samuel: Speak to Samuel (24) standing near the bottle of medicine you found. He is Bennett’s employee who helps with beer deliveries and was in the cart when the barrel got damaged. Talk to him about Prescott, Beer, and Disease. He says he doesn’t know Prescott, doesn’t know how the hole got in the barrel, and admits to having trypanosomiasis, which means he was in Africa. Curious, isn’t it? Accuse this suspect. He is guilty.

Motive

An army sharpshooter watches his friends die in a bungled military maneuver and vows revenge! Slowed by a tropical disease contracted on the Gold Coast, Private Samuel Frye spent years planning his vengeance on Louis Prescott, the colonel whose cowardice meant death for his companions. He taunted Prescott with the symbolic white feather and then, at the stroke of noon, took his final revenge. Many bullets flew that day: a bullet from the shop attic lodged in Prescott’s factory clock; a bullet from the revolver found by some children lodged in a passing beer cart. And the bullet fired by Samuel from the back of that cart struck Prescott directly in the heart.
