Tools are usable items, and an indispensable part of your arsenal. The majority of basic consumable items in the game can be purchased from vendors in Firelink Shrine (typically the Shrine Handmaid, occasionally Greirat after he has unlocked some additional items). There are a few special purpose reusable items with various unique effects as well. All of these items are extremely useful for your survival, giving you the ability to protect and recover from the untender ministrations of Lothric’s unwholesome denizens. Tools are accessible as the bottom part of your toolbelt, and you can store ten items on there, and another five on your main inventory status window for less commonly used items. Be careful about jamming your toolbelt too full of items you rarely use, it’s usually a good idea to keep your Estus Flasks and a few consumables that are useful for the specific area you’re exploring equipped. Otherwise you can find yourself fumbling for your flask in combat at a bad time!
Critical Items
These vital items are crucial for your survival. The Estus and Ashen Estus Flasks allow you to restore your HP and FP, while Embers restore you to full health should you perish, restoring your lost HP.
Estus Shards and Undead Bone Shards are rare items that upgrade your Estus Flasks, giving you more uses, and more powerful uses respectively. Keep an eye out for these on the maps throughout the walkthrough. If you can sneak ahead to pick these up even if you aren’t prepared for another area fully yet, do so!

Typical Consumables
Basic consumable items, these are mostly focused on curing and protecting against enemy status effects, but there are also very useful buffing items to temporarily enhance your performance offensively or defensively. The throwing weapons here are very useful early in the game, and because they scale with your stats, they do improve slightly as your character’s strength grows. For the elemental weapon buffing items, keep in mind that a weapon that already has an element on it (such as a Fire Longsword) cannot have another element applied. This is one benefit to using weapon infusions with no element, as you can apply temporary buffs to grant them more total damage output than a pure elemental weapon.
